Besides being the "scene standard" what is the purpose of making a release 2 cd versus a single 700mb/1.45gb file?
Is it for quality reasons? I've read about it being maybe for bandwidth but if both sets are 600mb in size, it that really effective?

Nothing really, it's always been the accepted 'scene' standard which carried over to P2P. Thankfully, communities that are much more pragmatic than the archaic 'scene' moved to AFR and DVD based filesizes.

I think that it is "a thing from the past". Back when you had no DVDs and thus no DVD players, you had the only option to split movies onto two CDs to get a better quality. But I don't see any reason for doing so nowadays.

That is teh reason... and imo as well it is a waste of time. The "scene" is slow to adapt to new technolagy they standerdise there cxrap with declerations that groups sign like thius

³ - Subtitles MUST be packed in a RAR file with the most compression ³
³ available. This RAR file shall be placed in a directory named 'Subs' ³
³ along with an SFV file containing standard checksum information for ³
³ that RAR. The subtitles must not be packaged in the main RARs for the ³
³ release and the RAR file containing the subtitles must not be listed in ³
³ main SFV for the release. ³
³ - Vobsub packs must have the .sub file packed with the MOST compression: ³
³ subs.rar = [ <avi-name>.idx + <avi-name>.rar = (<avi-name>.sub) ] ³
³ - Burned subtitles are only permissible when present in the source. If ³

³ original sample of the technical flaw in the release sample dir. ³
³ - Qualitative propers are not allowed, nor are propers based on ³

1.45 = 1/3 DVD is just less stupid than 2 CDs, but it makes more sense to encode at a fixed PQ (perceived quality), preferably set for transparency, and not at a fixed filesize.

The scene will keep doing 1/2CDs DVDRips, but they are also doing 720p/1080p rips at a fast pace, decent quality (not great, but decent) and good speeds. After many years of not downloading scene releases, I'm downloading now many of their 720p/1080p rips.

The only argument against fixed quality rips is that they can be too big and fit awkwardly on a dvdr. You might as well just download a DVD5/9 and not bother fooling with compressing it further.

I use as many forms as necessary, its a shitload easier than trying to backup dvds with avi/mkv, who cares about the extra discs. I've found to the contrary. hdd storage takes way less management I've found, I've saved hours and hours over optical task storage.

The main reason for me making the switch was time and management.

I store the rips on HDD, when I want to watch them I burn them on a DVD RW. I have the best of both worlds! So I have fragged old heads AND dildos hanging on strings, strapped with sparklers, shooting a cum-esqe substance!!

size matter if you got only a 1ghz or less and not 20ghz or more internet..... i prefer 700mb files becouse i get them very fast and i am pretty much for the scene rules, stantards are here for a good reason. another thing to think about, less file size more quality is the way of the futute instead of bigger filesize and less quality or bigger filesize and bigger quality. you would think that these ripping application have become much better and improved today than they was in 1997... and people have learned...

anyway internet is free for all and people do what they want, so if i see a filesize i dont like i dont download it, its as simple as that... in the end the file will die faster...
