Well I'm eventually moving back to the UK in the summer after 4 years of being away.

As you can imagine I haven't a clue where to start looking with regards to broadband. All I know for now is the house I'll be moving to has NTL terminated there, and BT phone of course.

I obviously Do Not want a capped connection, or limited in any way, and cost is not really an issue for me - but a decent 2 MB down/512 KB up would do (as long as it's not capped).

From my initial scouring NTL gets bad reports for capping and I'm erring towards ADSL for now; Bulldog, Pipex and Nildram seem to get decent reports but I've only literally started looking. Are BT themselves any good??

Opinions most welcome.

Thank you. :?

http://www.adslguide.org.uk is probably the best place to start looking. :)

BTW despite all the negative press bulldog get, I still haven't really had a problem with them.

They had a huge problem with customer service a year back though, but they seem pretty responsive if slightly retarded these days (puts them slightly higher than employees of most help desks though  )

512KB up isn't available anywhere as far as I'm aware.

BT are crappy cappers, and they own the network and most of the delays you get through other isps is entirely bts fault.

I think someone just needs to crush them for the sake of network infrastructure, the monitors are pussies and don't seem to touch them.

i'm (hopefully) getting eclipse broadband switched on tomorrow (friday) with a flex account 1mb/256 flexible up to 2mb down at a cost of 9p per hour extra if you decide to flex but i doubt i'll bother as 1mb should be enough for me :) cost is about 30quid a month and it's uncapped unlike BT (who i've just left) who are imposing caps of between 15-30gig a month depending on which connection you have.

BT are bollocks mate. As for ADSL, try Bulldog, I recently had teh chace to use it, and whilest I would not rate teh speed as good as my TW connection, it was way more impressive than the shitty BT connections I have used before.

Bulldog also have some decent prices too.

warning about eclipse. Totally incompetant. Screwed over one of my friends, everything was a done deal then they turned round and said it would suddenly take an extra 2 weeks for no reason after they'd given him an activation date.

Turns out they totally f*cked up the dates.

I switched from BT to Eclipse a couple of weeks ago (thanks Bassline) and have been totally happy with them, miles better than my previous ISP BT.

AOL are (if you're currently with NTL) a pretty sensible option now, they're UNCAPPED and available over NTL's cable network, AND you don't have to use their crappy software anymore :)

I can see how AOL via NTL is not too bad, especially without that shit they called software.

@George Tatum,i'm glad it all worked out well for you since i pointed you in Eclipse's direction :beerchug:

@spudthedestroyer, i guess shit like that happens at most ISP's one time or another so i reckon ya mate was just the unlucky one :(

I've never heard of eclipse (link?) , but will give them a look now, thanks Bassline for the heads up. Thanks everyone else for their opinions too.

Still, is there anyone using Pipex, Demon or Nildram??

Satisfied Pipex user here for over a year now, switched from BT and never looked back, only had one minor outrage which lasted about 2 hours or so and we use them at work as well.

Started on the 512/256 package which was ?23.44 per month then upgraded to the 1024/256 package at ?33.99 per month.

The lines are being upgraded as BT upgrades their system and ?23.44 will now get you 1024/256, my line will be upgraded to 2048/256 when BT get around to it, in the meantime I am still paying ?33.99 for 1024/256 which sucks. I can pay an upgrade fee of ?15 plus vat and it will get upgraded at once, but being honest may well drop to the 1024/256 package at ?23.44 instead.

There are no caps on these plans, the cheaper flex plan has caps.

The only drawback to Pipex is that newsgroup usage is limited to 10gb per month and all amounts over that cost more.

Their telephone support is variable, normally answered quickly, but I have had to wait over 20 mins once.

HTH.

Seems like you can only get the 1mb AOL connection over NTL cable. Anyone know what the upload is?
