No, I was getting 200k/s+ from BT last week, although it was outside the times it's throttled at.

Well I've had it with Pipex, they have gone from being one of the best ISPs to a total joke now. The only one good thing about them is the connection has been rock solid this last year, but £23.44 a month for 1MB is shit these days with no way of upgrading. So in a week from now I'll be on 10MB NTL for the same price.

Thank God you said that PC_Arcade. I'd done some research and the consensus was pretty good about NTL these days.

In saying that I was getting 140-160 GB a month with a one meg Pipex connection and I was just waiting to get the boot for abusing their FUP. Just that things take soooo long on 1 meg and also the Nazi way in which Pipex has throttled P2P without telling users.

But wait for this they (Pipex) are soon to be doing a massive advertising campaign (along the lines of TalkTalk) with none other than David (the Hoff) Hasselhoff - now that enough to make anyone leave

You'd have to call them, but in principle, yes AFAIK

anyone know anything about Sky unlimited 16mb @ £10 a month.
They also give free broadband for subcribers too (but with a cap)

I've just about had it with Eclipse; what used to be a superb ISP are now giving dial-up speeds so it's time to change. I want what I had with Eclipse, can anyone recommend a UK ISP that offers the following:

8MB preferably, but at least upwards of 2
Free Usenet access, or should I say usable free usenet access
Dynamic IP address (so that's Zen out)
Uncapped (ditto)
UK call centre, and one that doesn't feed you BS

Or is this too much to ask? I can't get cable so that's NTL/Telewest out.

NTL?
8MB preferably, but at least upwards of 2 : currently 10mb
Free Usenet access, or should I say usable free usenet access : mmm, err, UNS?
Dynamic IP address (so that's Zen out) : yep
Uncapped (ditto) : sort of, although they do throttle at peak times
UK call centre, and one that doesn't feed you BS : UK yes, BS, err yes they DO feed you that, but then they ARE an ISP ;)

It's Telewest in our area but it's all the same company these days. If I could get cable I would, trouble is some muppet decided to site the cable duct in the middle of the lawn rather than on the side of the house  :o

We tried to get cable about 10 years ago, the cable guy took one look at it and suggested we get a Sky dish.

I've done some digging re usenet and it looks like even the throttled Eclipse news server was a site better than anything any other ISP offers. Nildram comes closest but that's throttled at half the speed Eclipse was, and probably about the same as what I'm getting at the moment on average. I read some posts that Nildram aren't what they used to be either though.

Zen are putting a 100GB cap on all their legacy shit now (in march anyway). Shame since i use at least 250GB a month

Be* says there they are expecting 24mb/s enabled at my exchange in march.

@george, unfortunately they operate seperately and thumbing through telewest's website... they suck.

Lost my connection a week ago and have become so frustrated with the support I've downgraded to free package with the the intention of cancelling asap, but looking around and things have changed it all seems to be "light, average or heavy use packages" with the heavy use being bloody expensive
Who's good and cheap at the mo, got no cable in my area so thats not an option, best i can see at mo is £10pm 2mb unlimited (subject to their draconian fup)
anyone know of any better deals

how do you know I'm having a great time? :wacky:

Warning:
* Incompetant (that's a given for an isp though)
* You have to be pretty technical if you have a fault because they won't fix it, I wouldn't be on the internet if I wasn't able to diagnose things myself (In the first week of "connection" I had about 20mins combined uptime, and spent 6-8hrs on the phone [luckily free phone] to get them to admit it was their shitty router that was broken). i ended up buying a new router out of my own pocket, then complaining to their head office in london. Got a free month out of it, but I never would have got anything if i wasn't able to do technical diagnostics on my phone line and take a screw driver to it.

Beyond that, and that's a big THAT they've been okay :) No newsgroups though, i have to pay for that seperately.

My internet has been flakey for a couple of days but i think its actually the phone line that's the problem. We are getting huge amounts of noise on the voice line.
