I'm considering buying a Pioneer DV-490. Does anyone know if it will play xvid with GMC/Q-pel?

TIA

That I know, but I'm too lazy to softmod it myself. :)

One question about the xBox though: does the DVD-Rom slide out up front or does it open up on top like on the PS 1? Storage room issues... just in case.

Jesus, you guys are single-minded although I'm slowly getting convinced.

My problem isn't the actual time it takes to softmod it but the time I'll spend reading guides on how to do it. Besides, IIRC I'll need some game, right? And what about the remote and stuff? That's not included, right?

EDIT: Any idea where I can get one that's already modded?

I just realized that this should be in the hardware/software section. Sorry, please move. :)

Pioneer DV-490 cannot even play packed bitstream even though it's odd because Mediatek MT1389FE chipset should support it. Therefore it's easy to draw conclusion that it won't play XviDs that has QPel or GMC enabled.

Yeah, that doesn't look too good, although I'm probably gonna use it to watch DVDs most of the time anyway. I have a secondary PC connected to my TV set which I use for avi playback.

Are there any recommendations other than the xbox? Budget's around €140/95GBP (<-- where do I find the damn GBP symbol on my keyboard?!?:wacky: ).

I still can't work out how its being "lazy" to softmod an xbox, when the alternative is to spend so much more time nannying, re-encoding and faffing around when you want to watch the stuff.

You have to do a lot more work on anything other than an xbox in terms of playing back the content, so ultimately you waste a lot more time with a crap stopgap.

Since your wasting more time, its not laziness, its cowardess... and we all know what Bruce Dickinson does to cowards!

ROFL!!!

Like I said, I have a perfectly fine setup for avis anyway - the only thing even better than an xbox: Matrox G550 connected to a plasma TV.

But for some reason I don't like watching DVDs on it and my Yamakawa just died on me (after replacing the drive) - hence the need to buy something new.

For the modding part: I suppose it's easy when you know what you're doing but I've sifted through the modding thread and was a little... frightened. Plus I'll need to buy additional stuff when I go for the xbox, right? I'm thinking Splinter Cell, memory card and the remote.

On the other hand, I can buy a codefree Pioneer for ~ €130.

EDIT: Off to work again, break's over. :(

Yup I didn't understand jack-crap in the modding thread, but that's just me being stupid and occasionally retarded :outsider: :googley:

Memory card will probably be the most expensive thing at about £7 ;)

£50 + £7 + £7 + £2 (game rental) = £76 , assuming you can't shop for shit.

£76.00 = 111.209 EUR

Lets say your dog eats your remote and you cut up some wires, its still at least ten euros cheaper.

That doesn't play shit.

So, once again the anti-xbox arguements fall flat on their asses, ultimately its down to cowardess :wacky: Did i mention what happens to cowards?
<img src="http://www.freewebs.com/ilusive/Bruce%20Dickinson%20Powerslave.jpg" width="300">

I really can't understand a man that doesn't f*ck up a pc. F*cking up electronics is what men were invented for. I've been breaking pcs for a long time, and it was harder to break my xbox. And i did delete shit from the dash, and then unplugged it so it got the clock error, and then i took out the hdd and fixed it. Its like a pc, if you mess it up, you just format it.

So stop chickening out, be a man and buy one.

Ebay seller didn't ship to Croatia :matrix:

Damnit, Spud and Bruce have (almost) convinced me. I'm checking prices but the cheapest xbox I can find is at ~ €140. That's a lot more than your 50 GBP (which store?). Guess I'll search ebay too.

Be warned though, if I do this, I'm expecting LOTS of help and I'm gonna ask TONS of stupid n00b-ass questions.

One more thing that just occured to me: if I go for the xbox I could even play games on it. :o :wacky:

I'm assuming once it's modified it's a codefree DVD player, right?

Spud, you had me rolling on the floor laughing - literally. What a great pic, hilarious...

Even cheaper if you just go into a shop and look, or bid on ebay.

Well i don't know if its too cocky of me to respond "well... deerrr!" That's a positive there, you have to think how nuts the programmers would be if they by-pass the security of microsoft, allow you to play copied games but not allow you to play any region disc, or picture format. Those are software imposed aspects, and of course aren't there when you replace that dud software with xbmc

There's an xbox softmod thread btw, for discussion.

Sounds reasonable. 8)

I'll be sure to post there should I have any problems. Like I said, since you talked me into it I'm expecting support. :beerchug:

You're aware that I don't live in the UK, right? No cex store around here and they don't seem to ship. So I guess it's EBay. :)

just pointing out that i'm not making it up, and in a country with high prices like the uk it shouldn't be hard in most other countries to get it cheaper
