Got a bunch of RARs and PAR2 files off usenet.

QuickPAR reports that no repair is necessary, but the RARs still won't unpack (unexpected end of Archive for most of them).

Where can I go from here?

Did you grab an NZB for this? If not maybe the upload wasn't complete when you went to download it. I spotted a DVD-9 to download the other week and it took the guy 5 days to upload everything. In saying that the PAR2 file should report missing RARs until complete. Try searching for the file with binsearch and let it create an NZB for you.

Yeah, I grabbed a NZB off nzbmatrix.

If I open the sfv file with quickpar, it says that 66 out of 72 archives are damaged/incomplete.

Surely I should be able to fix them with the PAR2's ?

I've seen that before, it's a fucked par2 set and will "repair" the rars to a corrupt state, you'll have to download the faulty parts again and do not run smartpar on them

Just redownload then unpack with rar, you can't use smartpar cos the par set is knackered.

If the rars are screwed, then I'm afraid you are too unleass a new par set gets uppec

Must admit I've never seen a problem like that with anything from NZBMatrix or wherever.

I've only ever used Quickpar, would that make any difference?

i've seen this, but it was a corrupted .par file. I downloaded a +xx file and deleted the .par, and then double clicked the +xx par file instead. It then saw the entire set of rars.

To be honest, my dalliance with newsgroups isn't off to a good start. I've downloaded 3 dvdrs so far and every single one of them has either had too many incomplete rars for the pars to fix or the problem above.

I'm using a free news server as a test (maybe that's the problem) and newsleecher. The server is supposed to have about 4-5 days retention. Trying a couple of xvid rips to see if I get any better luck. :(

I'm pretty sure it is, free news servers are (in my experience) dismal

Guess I'd better bite the bullet and pay for some access then.

I can recommend http://www.usenetserver.com, they're cheap and have no limits, occasionally they are reliable too

What's completion like though? I'm guessing completion is the issue in my case.

Completion and retention are pretty good. 99%+ completion and 30+ days retention :)
