What happens when you do this:

1. Right click on desktop (not on an icon - just empty space)
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select DESKTOP tab
4. Select any of the default backgrounds
5. Select APPLY

Does it change the background? Sometimes when you lose your
desktop it is because the file Windows was pointing to got erased or
the path changed.

buh? Are you at work or something? It should look like this:
Image

You click browse, then you click apply. If you can't change your desktop, click start>run, type gpedit.msc

Then in this check to see if someone hasn't said you can't change your background. That would only be the case if you were at work, or at school or something where the admin is a member of the nazi party :)

active desktop... yuck. click customise desktop, then web, then uncheck everything :) Click ok and apply and whatever to get you to the desktop. Then if your some sado-sick freak that likes further punishment, go back and check the box and hit synchronise (or add a replacement desktop).

Active desktop is a dreadful feature though.

If that doesn't work i'm afraid your not expressing the problem very well or your using a different os i've never used before, maybe take some screens?

I had a similar problem and I have to inform you that, unfortunately it was caused by a trojan... i remember that I've reinstalled Windows...only that solved the issue

I had a similar sounding problem years ago with malware hijacking my desktop but managed to solve it.

The thread is here: http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic. ... highlight= if this is any help to you.

I suppose if you can identify what is causing it then a websearch might bring up a (hopefully not too drastic) solution.

Try run - msconfig - startup and look at the processes listed that run at boot time, hopefully something will be conspicuous. Good luck. :D

if its malware, what browser are you using?

If its IE... well, i won't say anything yet... you can probably guess what i'm going to say.

I usually favour Mozilla, but atm on opera on my laptop and frankly... ANYTHING is better than IE
