All of my avi files, whether xvid or divx or whatever else, have developed a really annoying problem, when I am watching the sound will get a little bit ahead of the video, and then the video will play fast for a second and catch up again, but it is doing this every few minutes.

I thought maybe it was system load or something, but it does this with nothing else running either so that blew that theory outta the water LOL Could it be a codec issue, or possibly my HDD? I have ruled out CPU load.

i hope you guys can help as some of you are more keyed up with codecs than me.

Would it maybe a good idea to kill all my existing codecs and just re-install a new set, as the current lot I have are, I think, a mish mash of different packs LOL If you think this would be a good course of action then maybe recommend some tools for removal? and some codec packs or the names of the individual codecs I need. I know that WMP9 will grab the codecs itself for wmv and wma, but I want to install the others seperate as WMP always sticks shitty avi codecs on.

9 times out of 10 it's a codec problem!

What I do use uninstall ALL codecs and then only put back the trusted ffdshow codecs and NOT crap like nimos bundle stuff, they're the main problem for people

With the stable ffdshow codec installed then any xvid (like my releases!) should play fine.

If not then it could be a dreaded other problem :(

Keep us posted !

I have a similar problem - video slows down and then fast forwards to catch the audio. The effect last about half a second and it can happen hmm, let's say 5 times in a movie. Or not at all if I'm lucky. If I "rewind" the movie it doesn't appear again.

I never installed a codec pack and I'm using ffdshow to decompress DivX (3,4,5) and Xvid. The other installed codecs/filters are: mp3, ac3filter, wma/divx audio, OggDS, VobSub, Morgan stream switcher and maybe some more.

The disk is heavily fragmented and maybe this could be the reason?

I try the new codecs, and I also need to defrag I think. I do not defrag my media drive much as it is only 700meg files so not too much fragmentation happens.

Also, I think my HDD itself is fine tho as up until a few weeks back it was my main drive and had alot of software running on it and it was fine. It has been checked for errors, how fucking long does that take LOL, and nothing was found, not even a single crosslinked files, absolutely nadda was wrong with it. Thinking back actually, just before this problem started I had some issues with files not playing and installed some new codecs, just wish I wasnt stoned when I did it and then I could probably remember what I did

yeap, if hdd can't give enough data (becouse of a lot of head movement coused by fragmentation, p2p running, etc.) something like this can happen

No major fragmentation, but done anyways, cleaned registry and removed all codecs and re-installed nice shiny new ones. Everything plays but have not got the time to watch a movie to see if problem rectified, but I will let ya all know laters.
