Just used GK for the first time & probably couldnt have picked a worse DVD to start with. NTSC 29.97FPS Interlaced, Bad AR & picture skew meaning a big crop.
Did everything as per instructions on Doom9 & in Spuds ripping tips..
Used forcefilm in DGIndex.
Resized & cropped using the preview as a guide.
Deinterlaced with FieldDeinterlace (No Blend).
Resize filter was soft. (Bicubic?)
I didnt change anything in the xvid codecs for first or second pass as it wasnt meantioned to do so in any of the guides that I was using.
The pictures come out better than expected, but.... It seems to be jumpy when theres a lot of motion on the screen. What have I done wrong ?

Is wrong, its an either/or situation.

If it is ppiii frame sequence, or 95%+ FILM, then you need to ForceFilm, and if that fails, redo it again without forcefilm and then use the other IVTC method, which is to check the IVTC box in save and encode.

If every frame is interlaced, then you use FieldDeinterlace, but if your using an deinterlacer you do not use any ivtc method (FORCEFILM or ivtc() ).

One or the other. ;)

You've removed frames and then merged frames hence why...

:)

Go right back to the beginning and check if its progressive and interlaced or it is purely interlaced. Note dgindex isn't perfect, check in the preview window!

what film is it? pure interlaced films aren't overly common.

Just 1 more quick question....

Where am I meant to see this 95%+ Film or however many percent?

I see this.....

AR 4:3
Frame Size 720x480
Profile main@main
Frame Rate 29.970 fps
Video Type NTSC
Frame Type Interlaced
Colorimetry blah
etc.

Quite confused at this point as all guides mention this but noones done a screen cap & I dont see it anywhere.

I am guessing that I just save the .d2v as it is with the honor pulldown flags & not forced films & use the Field deinterlace upon saving going on your explanation above.

Looks like like a real ntsc and shouldn't be forced filmed.
Just keep the 29fps and deinterlace.

A vob sample to be sure would be nice if it's possible.

Its under Video type iirc, it will say film 95% if you need to force film

Here's an example of why you can't trust it:
Image
It needed IVTC since the frames were not progressive. This was wrong because DGindex is a retard, it just parses a small file and takes what this file says as the truth. in this example the reason it says progressive is because it was anamorphic. if you hit F5 and watched it it was interlaced and progressive, hence -> IVTC.

Leave it at honour pulldown, then use the d2v file in gknot and progress through the frames one at a time. if its pure ntsc it should be interlaced on every frame. If it appears to go between progressive and then interlaced it needs to be ivtc'd via the checkbox on the save and encode screen.

All DGindex does is read the headers and have a guess.

1hr 48 mins later & a 2 pass rip, no forcedfilms, field interlace no blur, switching to 23.976 the problems gone :D
It still looks like it may have a slight ivtc problem so doing it again at 29.97 just to see if it makes a difference. Maybe the resolution on the other monitor is too high as its 1280x960, this ones 1024x768 so I'll bring them down together on pen drive & check which is best to release.
Thanks both of you for your advice :beerchug:

if you want to be sure, jump to a high motion sequence (preferably bright) and alt+print screen for 10 consequtive frames (using the right button/key) before encoding in the gknot preview window

I'll probably be able to tell you, although obviously its definitive with a small vob sample (10mb or so)

you don't seem to list your msn or yahoo details...
You could upload to a site like this:

Looks you need to ivtc it. But I wouldn't use force film.
I'd select inverse telecine in gknot.
