I was looking around for some good dvd players that would play my data discs. I have heard good things about Philips. I found this dvd player http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP642-Di ... B000204SWE
It says it plays MPEG-4, or DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x files.

So will it play Xvid avi files? Does it matter about the codec or do they just have to be avi files?

Yes it will play xvid..sometimes better than a divx  I would pass on the 642 and get the upgrade that is out..the 642 is your bottom of the line right now as it will only play .srt files and not VOB subs, also it won't play movies encoded with GMC or QPEL....there is a trick you can do with the 642 that is a sort of workaround for certain Xvids that if you press menu twice you'll get a clear picture otherwise some will look garbled or acid tripped.
Try looking for the Philips 5960 dvp..that has usb connection as well as being able to play VOB subs and a generally better user experience....Not much I have run across that this one won't play..in fact I am not sure I have run acrosss anything that wouldn't play on it yet.It should be about the same price as what you listed from amazon for the 642....for your money get that one. They sell them at Target or Walmart. :)

Yes, just make sure, unlike me, that you get one with the cd tray that recognises 700mb discs. Theres 3 different types. Mine only plays DVD data discs.

I never use disks on any of my xboxes anymore, I just stream over the network :)

Although I was lucky and they all read cds and dvds with no problems (or they did last time I used them with disks!)

I have 3, the £30 skyworth from WHS smiths packed up & didnt like XVID. The £35 Toshiba SD260E that I got from Currys plays most XVID & the £75 Sumvision SV-1000E that I got from SVP plays everything I've thrown at it so far.

hell no, network shares with hdd storage owns cdr.

Especially since you can now add new shares on the fly as a permanent bookmark :) Neat feature.

I thought about laying money on whether this would turn to a modded Xbox topic and I should have done so

well, in all fairness, the only time you won't get someone posting about the best value for money player would be if you start a thread entitiled "I want to waste my money and get a shitty stop gap player" :wacky: :googley:

If you want to price up an xbox:
1x xbox unit (I buy em second hand)
1x replacement fan
1x remote
1x HD pack (Component wire ;) )

That's going to be about £50.

You'll also need a way of getting it modded, best way is get hold of a copy of one of the three games with network code vulnerabilities, and an official memory card (imo, hardest part of modding an xbox is tracking down these things).

So that's about £70, say, and you've got everything you need to mod any xbox into a HTPC setup.

These days, xbox is perfectly suited to SD content and DVDs, however for HD you must be looking at htpc devices.
