I want to encode a rare old film, that a friend of mine put on dvd from my vhs. the source isn't all that bad (for vhs)but then again, quite shitty at times. any suggestions on a matrice & type of deinterlace I should prefer over others?

one is a matrix, multiple are matrices.

I haven't grabbed your vob but usually, FieldDeinterlace + jawors 1cd for a pal vhs rip.

There's some blurb on deinterlacing here:
http://www.100fps.com/

bobbing = extremely bad for vhsrips, it amplifies artefacts.

For high quality deinterlacing, I'd use something like this in the AviSynth script (made for your clip):
Code:
edeintted = last.AssumeTFF().SeparateFields().SelectEven().EEDI2(field=-1)
TDeint(order=1,edeint=edeintted)

I cannot recommend a custom matrix, because I always pick it according to the compressability of the clip. I pick a bitrate, run a compressability check in Enc (with certain Xvid settings), then adjust my Xvid settings accordingly and pick a custom matrix. Although in about 60% of my rips I use eqm_v3ulr_rev3.xcm. This matrix is meant for the typical low bitrate, less than 50% compressability rips. Other picks are eqm_v3hr.xcm and Didees SixOfNine.cqm, but they're meant for higher compressability and/or higher bitrates.

I forgot to mention that you'd need two filters for that code:
EEDI2 and TDeint.

They are available atleast here:
