I know a few of you use UNS for you usenet access, and you've probably noticed fluctuations in speeds, the solution is to use more connections to ensure you always get your maximum download.

The problem is that you are limited to 10 concurrent connections with UNS, well, not any more ;)

Here's how to workround that limit :

You already have 1 server with the following details :

news.usenetserver.com on port 119 & your username and password

Set up another identical server but change news.usenerserver.com to test.usenetserver.com

Then set up another account using a different server again:

secure.usenetserver.com, this time use port 563 and your u/p (make sure you forward port 563 in your router if needed) and MAKE SURE SSL connection is ticked in your usenet program.

30 connections, should be enough for anyone ;)

Good tip, thanks PC_Arcade. Just using the test server (so 20 connections) gives me 20mbps :-)

Yeah I thought about that. Thing is I use SABnzbd, which doesn't support SSL yet. I'm not changing as I love this program. I've had a quick look though and SAB does work with stunnel, but I'm unsure the effects of running secure and insecure through stunnel - I'll have a play sometime.

hmmm ssl doesn't work for me "400 Too Many Connections", test does though.

SSL was configured to use SSL and set SSL port to 563

meh, binned uns after only 6 months. I had the 20 connection package and was getting shitty speeds with SSL (last bit is SSL, first bit clear):

Image

Their support I found initially quite good, but when I explained my issues with them yesterday (see above), the guy went cold and blamed my connection. I mean wtf, see the graph above, I showed him that and that's when he stopped chatting.

So, I've now treated myself to a Diamond Giganews pacakage. Speeds are at max again with SSL. Shame about Usenetserver though - as I was also beginning to see missing articles all over the place. In fact I read in one forum that anything in a.b.m.x264 over 5 days was lost forever. Not good.

Really?? I've had literally zero problems - 20 connections was and is maxing my pipe, and I've not had problems with retention either.

Weird, having said that, if I did see problems, I'd bin them too LOL! There's too many good usenet providers to muck about with one that's no good.

I tried to download 5th element:

and got a shit load of missing parts. More than I would expect.

is binsearch also using the same servers as usenetserver?

It could just be that the indexing service you are using doesn't have all the headers and creates an 'incomplete' nzb file.
I'll try the nzb from newzbin. (zipped)

Finished downloading 5th element, and not 1 part missing.
sooo... noobs! :prat: ;)

Could be several things. What I said first or that usenetserver wasn't up to date yet with syncing that newsgroup.

What I mostly do in those cases try to grab the original nzb that is mostly posted with those releases (not always) and use that with my client or try downloading the nzb again next day.

Sounds like they just didn't sync, judging by the number of complaints ;)
