I know this was discussed in another thread, but I thought a new one would be better.

I thought it sounded like a good idea to compress your incomplete emule folder, so I shut down the mule and went to compress it, but it was going to take 2 1/2 hours to do it! Before I spend 2 1/2 hours compressing up my folder, I would like to know if anyone does this with their folder and if they have ever had any problems using compression and emule?

Don't know about other OS's but with Windows XP:

rightclick folder
properties
general tab - advanced

problems? dunno, i did not hear that anyone has some.
but i am not Bill Gates so won't bet.
well, it will take time to compress all files.
but it is very usefull.

corruption, some people get mass-scale corruption, the part files don't complete properally, read errors, etc.

I don't use or haven't used it, but that's some feedback I've heard over the years with m$ compression on the temp files

Yeah, who knows about the corruption and all that. It could work perfectly well on a given system and then not on another. Don't know when but I might do a test on a popular file with loads of sources, emule only uploading and downloading the particular file, and of course the incomplete folder set to compress. But it might not work while downloading a bunch of files and that could be where the problem is. Just don't feel like risking all my current files :)

Would be very nice if it worked without problems. So many files take a long time to complete while all along taking up their full size.

My emuletemp has been ntfs compressed for about 6 months with no problems at all.. Saved about ~15 gigs by doing that..

But theres a catch, your files will be heavily fragmented after a while..
Checked yesterday, and a recently completed movie was fragmented into 15 000 pieces..

Not that i care that much, that harddrive is pretty lightning fast anyway and there's no problem keeping up with x4 dvd burning...

Isn't that what happens even without compression? My harddrive pretty much stays fragmented.

Nice to hear you don't have any problems with using the compression.

i compressed and wrote a *.part file to a rewriteable cd, that fucked it up beyond repair.

i still use diskkeeper, and i still have had no problems with it, everything i send(as far as i know) isnt corrupted, and the ones i recieve arent(except from one person). besides for the time my computer burst into flames and killed me, everything has been going smoothly. maybe a little too smoothly. my computer needs.....to be fixed/more power!

Hmmm... wonder if it was the compressing, the writing, or the reading from the disc that messed it up, or maybe the disc itself, or maybe your burning app at the time, or maybe your burning app with another program runnning, or maybe you left the room and a dwarf came in and zapped it with his lightning finger?

Anywho, I'm gonna try this out sooner or later... see what happens... :|

It's impossible to avoid fragmention, but i think the reason emule creates an empty 700mb file is to minimize it.

Just checked a file that is almost ready to complete. It shows just under 2,000 fragments. Comparing it to your file, there is a big difference. If it is the compression that is doing that, then the possibility of corruption or errors does seem to be increased quite a bit.

@Death - You say you haven't had any problems, just for the sake of knowing... what is your harddrive(s)? capacity, rpm, interface, or just the model number.

Main computer:
Samsung (SP4002H) - 40 GB, 7200 RPM (UDMA 5)
Maxtor (6Y120L0) - 120 GB, 7200 RPM (UDMA 6)
Samsung (SP1604N) - 160 GB, 7200 RPM (UDMA 6)

Server:
2 x Samsung (SV4002H) - 40GB, 5400 RPM (UDMA 5)

Personally, i don't think the models matter that much, it's more important to have good airflow across the harddrives to cool them down. I would never dare to use emule on 7200 rpm drives with no airflow around them :-)

Yeah, I agree with the adequate airflow. I was just making sure you didn't have some sort of RAID 0 or 1 and a couple of 10,000 RPM SATA drives. :)

Naa, samsung harddrives is ok, and they are cheap. These days, it doesn't really matter which manufacturer you choose (ibm not included :-)

I remember in the old days, when seagate harddrives was the worst piece of crap you could get (slow as hell, looong spinuptime and powerhungry). Even Conner was a better manufacturer when they still were alive. But now, seagate is equal to the others in quality.
