Will changing my firewall to allow emules ports harm my computer in any way? What are the risks of this??

Also, what's the easiest way to do this with Windows XP?

EDIT: I allowed the emule ports, but I still have a low ID, and when I click the TEST PORTS button it fails to test them. What the hell???

The risks are small to negligable, open ports are only a risk if you have something accepting data/packets that fails to handle them correctly.

Emule is pretty mature and the number of known bugs are very low. Its very unlikely to anything bad will happen from opening ports, in fact if you want to use emule its actually mandatory.

I would recommend opening two randomly high ports (say 11021 and 11022). You should completely turn off windows internal firewall, its worthless and a hindrance. On your firewall/router, you need to make the tcp/udp ports for emule/kad are completely open.

ehhhh, the emule help file has detailed instructions how to open up the necessary ports when using the crappy windows firewall, but i just tried it and still get the cannot connect LowID error.

need a better firewall, i guess.

Using the windows firewall... once emule tries to connect it pops up a message... do you want to allow this program access which you obviously click yes to. Theres no real need to port it.
If youve allowed emule access & you still have a lowID then theres 2 possible problems:

1: you havent ported your router (assuming you have one).
2: your isp is blocking the ports youre using to access emule so change them to what spud suggested above.

I just got a new net today and I have the damn blindfolded donkey now :(

And I even think I won't be able to solve it since it might be because I'm not a network now and my girlfriend is the one with the router connected to her computer. Fuck that sucks.

I can't figure out all this forward port shit, it's way too complicate to do on HER computer for me. This sucks total arse.

I have 35 kb/s connection to eMule atm. Guild Wars is lagging as well. Yeehaa, I finally get internet and it's worse than ever though it was supposed to be 5Mbit!!!!

http://www.portforward.com has detailed guides on opening ports across a variety of routers and applications.

Mmm, since I installed MorphXT version 11.0 which goes with eMule 0.49a I keep having a low ID. I closed all ports and re-opened them, without any results. My virtual server is still serving the ports I need for eMule to be open, but when I click 'test ports' it says "Test Failed!". The only difference is that I installed the newer version of Morph. I guess they had something else in mind when they created it, I mean: this can't be their goal, right?

Anyone else experienced this problem or knows any solution?

I took the opportunity with the new MorphXT to do a clean install. No issues. Just took a little time to get the settings back. Perhaps not a bad idea if all else fails.

I haven't switched to 0.49 yet. Are you using protocol opfuscation? Did you try restarting your PC (Windows ...) or your port forwarding device?

Restarted both PC and router and I have a high ID now. Not sure which device triggered it.

just disable reply button, and don't help if it ends in fail.

Seriously, your reply isn't really helpful.

After having installed my new system, eMule didn't connect at all. Reboot 1. It still didn't connect. Reboot 2. It still didn't connect. Rebooted the modem. It connected, with a low ID. Reboot 3: high ID!

Having the same problem right now: low ID for over 1 day. Have restarted the PC, nothing happened. Restarted the router, still nothing. Restarted the PC again, nothing.

Maybe it IS true, about those three restarts :suicide:

If the router is taken out of the equation, do your problems go away?
