I have tried this dozens of times. It's usually an -avi file. I click on it, and Explorer prepares the preview and shuts down. Meanwhile, I've double clicked as well to open it in a player like RealPlayer, DivX Player, WMP or similar, and this program shuts down as well. As far as I know I have the codecs to play most files. What could be the trouble here?

I'm not sure, but the players you mention suck monkeyballs imo. I only use Media Player Classic and sometimes VLC.

If you want to preview a file you can also do that by not using the "preview" function in eMule, but by copying the 001.part (example) and rename it to 001.avi that way you can preview it as well in a normal media player.

Yeah I know. But it seems like it's the files that are fucked up. I mean, even if I just click at it in my explorer window, the whole thing shuts down when trying to make a preview (you know, on the bar to the left in explorer when browsing videos in windows).

OK, maybe you need a little program called "Unlocker". What you describe looks like what I experienced once: I wanted to delete an avi-file which was a renamed .part file. I could not delete, open, move or copy it and when I used Unlocker, I was able to delete it after all.

Try it: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

I think switching to windows classic folder will work. It has been awhile since I had the same trouble. If you search the web for something like "preview explorer .avi" you should come up with some registry fixes that will help too.

Here's one solution: http://www.tweakxp.com/article36849.aspx

------------
Windows XP Explorer has a 'feature' to provide a preview in the Details box on the left of the file you have selected, if it's supported. Image files, HTML pages, video clips, MP3s, etc are all previewed (even with the folder view open).

If you have a large movie clip and it either is corrupt (ie. no index from a partial download) or it uses an unsupported codec, then Explorer tries to load the whole file. This can slow your computer a lot and prevent deleting/renaming/moving/etc the file until it's finished.

Simply do the following steps:

1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

--------------

Thanks, I was SO tired of that. Now, let's see if it works the next time.

I think the problem might as well be the files being "corrupt" in some way, since Realplayer or any other media player give me that message. And it's kind of 50% of the movies. But now I'm at least saved from explorer shutting down constantly!

Thanks, I already got that program and it's good for deleting/renaming, but doesn't work with this particular "preview" problem.

If you use Windows Media Player or Real Player, try Media Player Classic (MPC) instead: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Med ... lassic.htm

That didn't work either: Got the same error in this program as in RealPlayer and Windows Media Player (both newest versions)

The latest files are:

Hatchet.2006.LIMITED.R5.XViD-PUKKA.avi
The.Woods.Have.Eyes.2007.DVDScr.XviD-TFE.avi
Sleepy.Eyes.of.Death.01.-.The.Chinese.Jade.avi
Fido.2006.LIMITED.DVDSCR.XVID-ALLiANCE.avi

Those are linked to from in here so I might just ask if anyone else have these problems with these files? If not, what codecs/players do you have installed?

Only tried with Fido. No problem at all. But I never have strange problems like that.
Codes? What is this?
Player? MPlayer.
OS? None from M$.

Look at XYxplorer:
http://www.xyplorer.com/ (I've actually paid for this application)
or
Directory Opus (I don't agree with their T&Cs so never bought this, pirate version at fh, and i imagine all the big sites)

Still have this problem. About 50% of the -avi's i get, I can only watch when I've converted to VOB folders / as in playable on the DVD stationary. I don't understand why all my media players shut down when trying to open the files. Can anyone explain? Do I need a new codecs pack? Anyone had this problem? It's like the programs crash because they can't handle the files.

Try scanning for viruses & malware.
If nothing comes up then do a format & reinstall of windows. Easiest & fastest way of fixing the problem :bottle:

reiterated; i'd use one of those two, especially if you manage a lot of machines.
