Because I have a British documentary on my country in World War II and I want to show it to the kids, I need subtitles for it. I searched around and found Subtitle Workshop.

The question is: is Subtitle Workshop the best option to easily create subtitles? Or is there another, better, easier way?

Subtitle Workshop is really good. Thats what I use to spellcheck the subtitles I download although when I created the subs for metropolis, I did them manually as I hadnt discovered any proggies to help me at the time.

ok, lets clear out somethin here: spellchecking stuff you download = NOT 'creating' subs

@slayer is what badbugs said what you want to do, or do you want to make subs from scratch => typing all the txt down & timing it to the video??

as I asked...
so you did some tl from german to english, & used the original timing of the file => yet again: this is NOT creating, its simply translating

no offence meant m8,but I'm a fansubber, I know what it means to create & time/typeset subs from scratch; thats why I wondered what exactly it was you have done

@slayer: I prefer aegisub

Again... Read It AGAIN!!!

Timed from where ? What subtitles Did I Translate? There was no german subtitles to translate & if you knew the film & did your research about the film I was talking about (& I added a link for you  )then youd realise that there is intertitles during the SILENT film in German so whether you like it or not, I CREATED the english subtitles from scratch for this film, timing & all. :argue: :fruity: :cussing:

Whoa, I've been translating and typing subs now for the documentary. It lasts 53 minutes and it took me around 5 hours up to now. I still need to sync them...

that'll take you 50 hours if you have never done it before  (and if you want to do it right that is, without framebleeds etc...)

Wow, that sounds nice. Thanks for the encouragement :wacky:

I have a feeling that it will be less than 50 hours because Subtitle Workshop is gonna help me.

of course, I was only kidding
most subtools do a fairly decent job, but (and I'm talking strictly from an obsessive fansubber's point of view  ) it usually needs some manual tuning

Of course, the machine is never perfect (because it's made by man).

So what exactly does the Subtitle Workshop do ? I'm creating a subtitle from scratch right now and what a painstaiking job it is..I'm doing it the "old school" way..first trying to translate a sequence with dialog into decent english text..then trying manually to time the text with dialog...I'm using a old srt text from another movie, delete the text and change the time..
Image

Can I upload a avi file in the program and slow down the speed with a timeline? That would help I think to see in slowmo when the speech stops and ends...and maybe copy the time into the srt so I don have to write it ...
Link to the program ?

...and can somebody help me with the translation into decent and correct english ?

I found out that about 4 seconds is a proper time for 2 sentences and 2,5 to 3 seconds on one sentence..is there a golden rule ?

over at the group, we use a lead in of 5-10/100sec & the same lead out (without framebleeds of course. mainly, coz the human brain hears faster than it reads
