I have a few question..whats the different between 4:3 letter box and 4:3 pan scan ? whats the best setting to record VHS ?

when i burned it on a dvd for then to use GK in my pc it came out like this after the rip:

File Name ..........: Slash (1984) VHS Rip slasherman.avi
Total Size (MB) ....: 896,02 MB
Total Streams ......: 2 Stream(s)
File Size Correct ..: Yes

Video Size (MB) ....: 833,60 MB
Video Length .......: 01:24:04
Video Codec Name ...: XviD MPEG-4 codec
Video Bitrate ......: 1386 KB/s
Resolution .........: 528 x 400
Aspect Ratio .......: 1.32:1
Framerate ..........: 25 FPS
Color Depth ........: 12 Bits
Quality Factor .....: 0,262 B/px

Audio Size (MB) ....: 62,41 MB
Audio Length .......: 01:24:04
Audio Codec Name ...: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Audio Bitrate ......: 103 KB/s (VBR)
Channels ...........: 2 Ch
Sampling Rate ......: 48000 Hz

My setting was on 4.3 letter box when i rcorded the VHS on the LG playere..

File Size Correct ..: Yes

Video Size (MB) ....: 657,92 MB
Video Length .......: 01:33:10
Video Codec Name ...: XviD MPEG-4 codec
Video Bitrate ......: 987 KB/s
Resolution .........: 544 x 416
Aspect Ratio .......: 1.30:1
Framerate ..........: 23,976 FPS
Color Depth ........: 12 Bits
Quality Factor .....: 0,181 B/px

Audio Size (MB) ....: 42,65 MB
Audio Length .......: 01:33:10
Audio Codec Name ...: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Audio Bitrate ......: 64 KB/s (CBR)
Channels ...........: 2 Ch
Sampling Rate ......: 24000 Hz

4:3 letter box is widescreen, black borders. (aka. non-anamorphic widescreen)
4:3 pan scan if visual rape, either the open matte print is knived up and zoomed on, or the widescreen has the left and right cropped.
4:3 open matte is raw source that widescreen is mastered from.

pan scan is evil, letter box is a poor mans widescreen, open matte captures everything but obviously many director's don't intend films to look like that.

RGB is scart; YPbPr is component and vastly superior.

yes, its a magnetic tape; the picture deteriates at the edges and overscan usually crops this out.

If you examine a piece of tape under a microscope/viewer, on the left and right of the frame you will find additional information (sound, etc.).

You will always get shit at the side of frames from a tape capture.
