Anyone know what's caused this?

Image

Those white bits appear and disappear up and down the length of the right hand side, all the way through the rip.

I'd like to know what I've done to make it like this, because this wasn't on the DVD and didn't show up in GK either. :?

Looks like you need to crop more...you might have cropped it right on one part of the movie but later on the image could have "floated" in a different direction....I have had this happen to me alot on some of the more obscure releases or I should say speculative sources. :)

It can't be that, it's all the way through the file and I always scan back and forth to check for wandering borders during ripping. :o

you are uncropping, take 2-4 pixels off the right. Don't rely on autocrop since it can't handle vhs style fuzzy borders :(

The white borders are a source issue, you probably won't see it on tvs because of overscan.

IIRC there's an error in the CROP function in some versions of avisynth. It doesn't crop on the right with certain mods. I had that problem with one or two rips in the past. You can try a different version of avisynth or different crop values (if your source allows).

I believe there's a topic about that on Doom9.

That sounds likely, I'll just have to re-do it with my fingers crossed and see how it comes out.

I re-ripped this today and got this:

Image

I used the preview window to scan all the way through the film (including the very screen above) and had both sides of the image correctly cropped, but it still came out wrong. The white dots have gone but it hasn't cropped enough on the right.

What's going on? :? I'll have to fiddle with avisynth I suppose.

This might be a stupid question, but why not crop a little more? Do you get this problem no matter how much you crop on the right?

Well I didn't remember the cropping values for the first rip, so I couldn't try and increase that value on the second, but I am totally sure the line on the right only showed up in the finished file - never in the preview.

It's as if I'm getting different cropping on the end result compared to what I set it as.

:?

Maybe I'll release it as is, the movie is generally pretty dark and the slight border wouldn't be visible most of the time.

I chose an especially bright scene to demonstrate the cropping error and it wouldn't show up on CRT TVs due to overscan.

Plus the image quality on the DVD (yes, it's from a DVD) was pretty crap and it'll be going into LQ anyway.

if you don't remember the cropping values, have a look at the avs script produced and get em from there :)

The white line is scan, where the negative isn't aligned properally and you are seeing the edge of the film where the audio and subtitles are stored.

Looking at your screen cropping is right up to the edge of the film, but you have a half screen of black pixels. If its constant you will need to overcrop to get rid of it... do not rely on autocrop, it can not overcrop since its looking for a complete line of matting through the frames it scans if anything in there is no black, be it a scan line or a half frame it will not crop. Can only be done manually :)

No, it was only in the first rip that this appeared. The white line was not on the VOBS at all, it is a result of an error somewhere in GKnot.

I am cropping it manually, like I said above I have the image perfectly cropped all the way through at the movie preview stage, yet these errors still appear on the final file.

This is the cropping as I set it:

And this is with no cropping at the sides:

Very Strange, btw worth noting is that your first image of the preview is undercropped, you have a line of 1/2 black pixels on the right. ;)

This DVD is uncroppable!

Cropping applied:

End result:

I've had enough tries, it's getting released like this.

Have you tried cropping with another program like VirtualDub?

Have you tried applying a letterbox (on the right border) before cropping?

I didn't know that was possible.

Besides it has VBR MP3 audio like any half-decent rip these days, god knows why VDub doesn't support it. :?

Hmmm... Yes that sucks. You'll have to strip it of. But cropping is possible with VirtualDub.
