Almost all my video files (the usual DivX & XviD AVIs) play fine, except for 3 which have exactly the same problem.

They play fine for maybe up to a minute, then the video becomes extremely choppy (unwatchable in fact) for the rest of the file, although the audio is fine.

Here are specs for the files:

Total Size (MB) ....: 695.10 MB
Video Length .......: 01:45:50
Video Codec Name ...:XviD Dev ver. 03/2003
Video Bitrate ......: 837 KB/s
Resolution .........: 544 x 336
Aspect Ratio .......: 1.61:1
Framerate ..........: 23.976 FPS
Quality Factor .....: 0.191 B/px
Audio Codec Name ...: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Audio Bitrate ......: 80 KB/s (VBR)
Channels ...........: 1 Ch
Sampling Rate ......: 48000 Hz

Total Size (MB) ....: 696.76 MB
Video Length .......: 01:27:05
Video Codec Name ...: XviD Final 1.0.2
Video Bitrate ......: 1046 KB/s
Resolution .........: 640 x 336
Aspect Ratio .......: 1.90:1
Framerate ..........: 23.976 FPS
Quality Factor .....: 0.202 B/px
Audio Codec Name ...: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Audio Bitrate ......: 72 KB/s (VBR)
Channels ...........: 1 Ch
Sampling Rate ......: 48000 Hz

Total Size (MB) ....: 697.10 MB
Video Length .......: 01:29:07
Video Codec Name ...: XviD Dev ver. 03/2003
Video Bitrate ......: 1012 KB/s
Resolution .........: 464 x 336
Aspect Ratio .......: 1.38:1
Framerate ..........: 23.976 FPS
Quality Factor .....: 0.270 B/px
Audio Codec Name ...: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3)
Audio Bitrate ......: 80 KB/s (VBR)
Channels ...........: 1 Ch
Sampling Rate ......: 48000 Hz

That dev version of XviD looks unfamiliar to me, although only 2 of the 3 use it. All 3 do have low bitrate 1 channel MP3 sound however, which seems suspicious.

I'm not sure how that would mess up the framerate when the audio plays back fine, but I'm no expert.

A quick search of the XBMC forums didn't find me any answers. Any ideas?

Is there any QPEL or GMC used in those files? You can check this with GSpot for instance.

I had this problem with a version of "The Hidden" and "Near Dark". The video contained quarter pixels and began stuttering like hell after the first half of the intro, however the audio was playing fine.

Nope, none of them use either. :?

Can you post the type of frames that are used in the video? Like I, P, B, V ... You can check this with GSpot too. There is a button that shows all the frames of the movie.

GSpot sometimes displays wrong information. :?

The frames button shows two of the files as using almost all P (blue) frames with I frames (red) dotted here and there.

Another shows alternating B (green) & Ps all through with an occasional I.

This is from the VGS (Visual GOP Struct) of GSpot, isn't it? If so, I would say the videos are not the cause for your problem.

Have you tried burning the videos on different media? Try the lowest write speed possible.

They aren't on disc, they are files on the XBOX HD. So it's not that. :?

Hmmm... Does a friend of yours have a similar XBMC? You could try to play the files over there. If the files don't play it's something with the XBOX. If they do it's something with your XBOX. :(

I found increasing the cache size helped enourmously with file sstreamed over the network. Don't know if it'll help with media on the HDD though.

gvop, qpel, etc. will pose absolutely no problem to XBMC. CQM, etc. will work without incident on XBMC.

I'd check the audio interleaving its a biggy that can cripple any machine... try passing it through nandub, remuxing the audio and see if that works.

Where the buffalo roam is an example of something i couldn't play because of 'corrupt' audio packing, but when i repacked the audio it played without problems. Worth a try.

Looks like I'll have to watch the files on the PC (not ideal but bearable) or try re-encoding the audio (fiddly).

Thanks for the suggestions. 8)

audio remuxing will take 2-5 mins depending on your pc.

It is literally, video>direct stream copy, audio> direct stream copy, file>save as. Done.

It works! (For one file at least). 8)

btw, did you try the menu button on the remote when listing the files and then selecting "open with" (I think) then choosing the dvd player?

That may allow you to play without needing to remux a poorly muxed file. I found that when my network was under huge stress and i was getting a lot of collisions, it streamed network files without incident whilst the default player didn't seem to handle lost packets as well. Leads me to believe it might be better at buffering, and as such might play your file without processing.
