WLAN router dies / Hacker alert?

Hey mates I need your help.

In the last months my WLAN router keeps restarting itself. Sometimes it totally dies (no ping, no web interface). I tried another WLAN router and it does the same thing.

I suspect that someone from outside is trying to attack me and the router defends itself by shutting down or restarting itself. Maybe even that asshole manually restarts the router - I don't know.

You can imagine that this is totally annoying. Downloads abort, chats crash ...

Have you ever experienced anything similar or do you know a way to confirm my presumption? How can I protect myself?

I've no idea, but doesnt your router have some kind of logging? I know my belkin does although thats about as much advice as I can give

I get exactly the same thing, except it doesn't restart... i just can't get on it.

I need to turn it off, unplug it, then turn it back on.
I think the router is just fucked.

They tend to overheat and when they overheat (related to the number of open connections), they tend to lockup and need a reboot.

Cheap routers mate, you need to buy a better one i suspect

ps. if you are with BE don't touch that shit they give you, that is open to telnet upgrades by anyone on the entire network... its a huge security they tried to cover up.

I'm using the BE box as a bridged modem & the belkin as my router...
chup's in Hungary & I don't think Be made it that far yet :googley:

I would serious not use that thing, its a shit box and a huge security (and stability risk).

I was sent two of those things and they still were unstable and slow as all buggery.

Bridged I cant see it as a problem. I know my way round the belkin & I don't have the money right now to replace it, besides its got a lifetime warranty. I've managed to go flat out b/w on torrents & rapidshare, both coming down at over 1000k which is what they said my max would be.

I've not had to reboot the BEBox even once

In bridged mode you cant login to the Bebox. To come out of Bridge mode you have to hit the reset button on it.

I have a Buffalo Nfiniti router and a D-Link one. Both show the same behavior.

If it is an issue of heat, does it help if I cool the thing somehow? I mean it's not hot or anything.

These routers weren't cheap. Can you suggest a router that doesn't make such trouble?

The bebox is hot enough to fry eggs on but the belkin is only luke warm...

Buy a quality router next time chaps, one with a lifetime warranty :wink:

Yeah, sort of... but I was more disappointed than anything, ahahah

My D-Link sits on it's side... very rarely does it need a reset...

Because the first one was broken and the second one was broken.

I spent ~10hrs in total in the space of 3 days on the phone to them explaining the problem was with their hardware, explaining in detailed technical prose about how their routers were shit before going out and buying a router that wasn't made by the shittiest modem manufacturer on the face of the planet which, unsurprisingly worked first time :wacky:

I then told them their routers were shit and I wanted compensation so they gave me a free month.... not their belgian office of course, they were still busy asking me to unplug all other devices from the phone socket and telling them if that worked whilst on the phone to them

The london office apologised and were the ones who knocked some money off and gave me a free month
