I know this isn't recommended but when it's for someone who hasn't got a standalone divx player it's sometimes the only choice.

I wanted to re-encode a 4:3 PAL TV show which had been ripped at the incorrect AR (640 x 368). I would have expected the following to work:

Use gknot to resize to 640x480, save the .avs and exit
Load the .avs into CCE, set the video setting as MPEG-2 for DVD and the Aspect ratio to 4:3, and re-encode
Copy to DVD with DVD Lab Pro 2

This didn't give too bad a result, the AR was ~1.39:1 but there are black borders at the top and bottom of the screen. Does anyone have any idea why?

I would do it this way:

1.) Demux audio with VirtualDub(Mod) to uncompressed PCM (.wav)
2.) Open video and audio with TMPEGEnc (this program creates great quality, you can do all resizing/AR-correction/cropping here)
3.) Save video and audio with TMPEGEnc to MPEG-2 file
4.) Create DVD (with or without menus) using TMPEGEnc DVD Author

CCE gives far better results than TMPGEnc though.

TBH, anything I've wanted to convert AVI->DVD (mostly for the kids), I've just run through ConvertXtoDVD which does a quick job. Not really bothered about the quality, because it's going to be watched on a small TV.

What ViSCeRaL said  Quality was important in this case.

My tip for CCE, just use an avisource in gknot process it all you want and up to the right resolution (remember TV overscan will likely be an issue). Take that avisynth and use it for the source in CCE.

A feature of avisynth you want to use is AddBorders()
http://avisynth.org/AddBorders
Which will help you maintain the AR.

I would strongly suggest using gknot to get it to the right AR, then "patch" the tiny bit of resolution you have left with the addborders, matting is necessary for mpeg2.

The AR was OK, I think overscan was the culprit regarding the black borders. Having googled overscan I think I should have resized to 658x540 rather than 640x480.

Except that it's not a multiple of 32x16, d'oh!

16x16 is a more modern option
