I seem to be having a problem adding subs yet again...
yes im trying to hardcode subs cause i dont really know how to do it any other way :)

My Sub to SSA isnt recognizing the .sub file... so i have a .sub and .idx file, subtitleworkshop doesnt read the .sub file either...

Any words of wisdom?

Under Linux you can try to convert the sub with AviDemux.

What's the exact problem? Getting the subtitles to be displayed on a standalone or on the PC?

If the problem is concerning the standalone than I can tell you that it has to support them!
If it does you usually have to name the subtitle file exactly like the AVI file (except the file extension of course):

Something.Is.Out.There.DVDrip.XviD+MP3.AVI <--- video
Something.Is.Out.There.DVDrip.XviD+MP3.SRT <--- subs

There are several subtitle formats, which use the file-extension .SUB ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitles#Subtitle_formats
But having an .IDX file identifies them as VobSub subtitles that can be found on DVDs.
That format is image based  and thus you can't just convert them to text like that. You need an optical character recognition (OCR) tool.

Like elchupacabra mentioned you can do it with AviDemux. However OCR usually results in typos in the converted subtitle file - so check them afterwards!!

VirtualDub seems to have a feature to insert the subtitles into the video stream -> hardcoded subs. Although I haven't used that ever.

Next release will be: La Cité Des Entfants Perdu (1995) + Making Of (Status: working on the subtitles)
Last release was: Svengali (1931)

Only on bad subs, most ocrs i've done are pretty much there. Its only when the font is messed up and the letters clumped together.

Easier than you'd think for english language anyway. :)

I've used SubRip many times and it seems good:
