Fuck, I just wanted to get some hardware working and someone told me to install all the Microsoft Windows updates. I did it and nothing seems to be working. My browser is annoingly slow, my connection acts very strange, but worst of all, all my players stopped working. I don't know why. Tried to mess with this access control thingy from SP1, but it doesn't help much. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

I can't think of any problems I have with updates on Windows XP. I never install all the updates though. Mainly the critical ones and newest directx.

who knows...
u can uninstall updates?
coz sometimes they kill windows.

like example 2 of my friends installed one hot-fix (forget which one)
and after that they lost internet conections.
after uninstaling - all is ok

btw. doh, u could not wait 2-3 days?!

@PrayeR, don't worry, my eMule is working, although I got the feeling it's not downloading as good as before. However, my upload is still ok, so I'm going to leave it working.

Not all updates can be uninstalled, and the ones that can I'm afraid to remove, who knows what else can get screwed, and I can't afford losing my time like this for a few more days. Next week I'm going to reinstall the OS, format c: is the only thing that works in such cases and the only reliable cure for Microsoft.

Good that I didn't sell my old 40GB hdd, so now I can at least backup some of these cheap horror flicks I didn't manage to burn on CDs.

Damn :matrix: :matrix: :matrix: Microsoft!

Has Windows Update been hacked?

Or they messed up a ptach that f*cks windows up then?

Bit of a coincidence that people are habing probs after updating?

I'm a bit cautious now about updating

I never use auto update, stupid thing kept telling me to install all the patches I already had. I have got no updates showing for XP Pro, been like this for almost a month now, strange.

i thought there was a trojan varient that hijacked windows updates. i thought it was a bit odd when i opened a browser and it started out at microsofts update page, even though i have microsoft ip's blocked and set ie to never auto update.

also read some stuff recently(i think from the Register) about microsofts UK pages being fucked up, not linking correctly to the final updates for people in europe.
i didnt update anything, that may be why my computer works.

i guess it was this story, its win2k UK(i didnt pay much attention as i dont live in the uk)-

say,
i also turn off active x scripts, ive seen a lot about windows having some critical fuck ups with some new virusmalwarebadnasties and browser hijacking. buncha sites say to turn active x off, but windows update wont work with it off.

i wonder how many of these problems are deliberatly caused by microsoft to encourage purchasing updates? i hear a lot about 'addictive updates' and with the new intellectual properties enforcement laws being passed that someplaces will have mandatory updates. hehe, i guess read my signature for more. i sound like a fucking public service announcement or an infomercial.

i'd scrap it all for BASIC, but i'm detached from reality.

10 print 'i love windows'
20 goto 10

run

Grab the Windows XP at SR.

It's the roundup, sith SP1 included.

Once that is installed, do a windows update, with a keygen at hand, and do all the updates BEFORE installing any 3rd party software.

Should be flawless.

if you use M$:

rule no.1. install M$ system
rule no.2. bind only needed protocols to network interfaces
rule no.3. install a firewall and try to do all you can with it (means ban *all* traffic and allow what is needed)
rule no.4. install antivirus program
rule no.5. if you want to update do it now (may need some temporary changes in firewall rules)
rule no.6. turn off windows update

then install/copy your drivers/programs/settings/data from backup
and don't use windows update anymore (till next install)

works for me :)
