this has gone on long enough. Suddenly it will say it's february 2002, then 2004 november. Time also changes. Not constantly, but often enough that if I sort my downloaded files by date, I get quite a mixture.

Very anoying. Whatever could be the cause?

oh yeah, it started happening after a re-install of windows xp(upgrade, not fresh).

Do a complete Reinstall.

Otherwise, replace the MB battery.
Reset the CMOS.

Also could be a virus.

I had a problem like this were my cmos was always resetting and giving me errors on boot-up!

I changed the battery and everything was fine!

I too would reccommend changing the cmos battery, some weird shit happens when the battery is dead.

Nehhhhh.......if a cmos battery bites it it bites it.....doesn't regain midway only to pick a random date.....

Either it's a virus/trojan.......or some piss poor crack from some software you recently installed.....

Either way you'll be having a nice day

Otherwise --> faulty CMOS. You tried updating ur BIOS?

motherboard viruses were wiped out in the great system wars of 1877. They didn't have systems back then I hear you cry?

John, I've read about Tons of people using an Infected copy of XP, so maybe you're just installing a virus with windows and not even knowing it.?

eh,
i try to think up some causes that nobody else put, these are if nothing else worked(i would guess low battery),

it could be a virus, not on the motherboard/cmos/etc, but one that hijacks the syncronize time from the windows time webpage. hijackers seem popular.

i'd guess low battery, but something i noticed effects the clock are constant high cpu. if your going at 100% consistently for hours that could effect your clock. old edonkey would do it to mine.

if you got a vbs virus going on in ram it could mess your time up.

if its suddenly a lot colder or hotter season in your country the expansion/contraction of your circuitboard may do it. probably unlikely, unless you notice the timefuck ups at certain times(in the morning its usually cold out, so the board contracts). little microcracks happen to the solder'ed connections.

hehe, c'mon! are any of my responses wrong? they sound a bit odd, i know, but they are possible and not at all bullshit.
eh, i still wonder that so many people thought my disc scan/defrag once a month thing was all wrong, but i still think it was right and do it my way with good results.
still, i am interested that i may be wrong, i would just like to know. If i am wrong about this, i may be wrong about other things, though nothing could ever convince me about what a good actor david hasselhoff is, or that he is actually a human, not just the creation of an insane mtv committee.
