I've used it many times.. then suddenly it's only BW??!?!?

Graphics card is Geforce FX 5600. Tried updating drivers to no avail.

Think it might have something to do with tvtool....?

No, but it did happen just after I'd unplugged and replugged the cable.. I wasn't using the tv-out at the time, but still...

IMO thats complete rubbish, putting the cables in the wrong way round makes no difference at all, it simply doesn't work/display right, I do it all the time. Sounds like your buddy is lying out of his arsehole/ blaming the wrong thing.
I'd give the spud garantee on this, but i don't ever garantee anything on principle :)

There are two possibilities:
Your problem is that you probably don't have your "tv device" (called a monitor on your comp) to the right region. I believe uk is pal-I. If you put NTSC it displays in black and white and if you put pal in an ntsc region it displays in black and white also. You need to look at the region settings for your gfx card.

and the second:
You have it in the wrong mode, I don't need tv-tool for ATI, but I assume you have it in SVHS/S-VIDEO when you using composite? Click the button to change the mode and it will display in colour.

When I last used TVtool, it was the second. :) On a side note, I'm pretty shocked nvidia still haven't sorted their TV-out, its been an issue for ages and they still haven't done bugger all to improve the situation. Luckily there is tvtool, but they shouldn't rely on a 3rd party to get their device working to any competant level :eatthis:
Then again, the Geforce 440MX I got upstairs doesn't even need tv-tool, it can do everything in the latest nvidia drivers without the bloat of another program. Try dump the tool and sort the problems through 2nd button on desktop>properties>Settings

Well, it DID happen after i'd unplugged/replugged the cable..
TVtool don't work at all anymore. It wont display anything on the tv. There's like a flicker when I click it on, but then nothing. I have to use that device-properties to get it to show in Black & White.

I've been searching around for that region settings but can't find it anywhere... In tvtool it's greyed out.

I am using composite in svhs as you said, but this has worked flawless up untill now. The composite/s-vhs setting in tvtool is grayed out.

if u unplug the settings and restart, it turns that device off in software. It won't be broken, you'll just have to setup all your options again.

I know its solvable this way because when you first setup your gfx card, and every nvidia card i've ever installed, it's the same thing. Output is black and white, until you change the settings to the correct wiretype and tv type.

I can't help you past that, well i could but that means plugging in my pc upstairs, I use ATI radeon now so the interface is different under settings. It's there though, so just look through them properally and you'll see a button to ensure you have your tv setup in the right region. You can also change the wire type. Remember to click apply after you change the setting.

Its wat everyone goes through due to nvidia's shitty tv-out support :matrix:

I don't think it's possible to blow anything with RGB, unless you expose the wire, plug it into the mains, dip one of the plugs in water, cross the streams and then plug it into your pc.

The current carried isn't high enough.
