Besides virus scanning and trojan hunting, you should run disc scan and defrag about once a month. It helps a lot.
It will lengthen the life of your hard drive, and can make your downloading faster. emule's way of storing information will make your harddrive fragmented.
Disc scan will help to cut down on corrupted transfers, and sending out bad chunks.

there are a few programs like 'diskkeeper' that will take care of defragging,
but the default window ones you may want to use is accessed by-

-start-programs-assesories-system tools-'disk cleanup'
then
'scan disk for errors'
then
'defrag'

it may take awhile depending on your computer/size of your hard drive, and you should exit any programs running.

these things are good to do about once a month. I've seen some recomendations before to do it every two weeks if you use emule alot. I've also skipped a few months. Its not a critical thing, but it does help.

By the time your hard drive sounds like its full of rusty nails and sand, its too late.....

maybe take a day for maintanance once a month. kill the mule and all the extras,
and run these programs-
(this is the order i do them)

update your virus definitions
update your trojan software(thats your anti-trojan software)

virus scan
trojan hunter/scanner
ad-aware
spybot/spy sweeper
disk cleanup
disc scan
disk defrag
this probably would take few hours.

i also use the freeware program regcleaner, though you should know what your doing before you use it. The registry she be a harsh mistress.

so, errr,.
thats it.
and
screw canada

hmmm, come to think of it i hardly ever defragment my hard drives. Maybe it's a good idea to defragment them every month, although doing 0.2TB is a pain in the add

that executive software's disk keeper program seems to work well, defragmenting in the background. It seems not to need to set aside a special time to do it, as it does it a little bit when nothings in use. i'd recommend it,,,
-except-
it seems to almost always start defragging when i try to capture video, or something else that doesnt like to be disturbed(like writing cd's). I have to boot my capturing computer up without disk keeper. its easy to do selective boots in 'remote assistant', its just a pain if i have to capture something off tv without notice/rebooting time. It almost seems like the program knows, and just wants to piss me off.

still, i got close to a terabyte spread out over a few drives, and with that program they are almost always less then 5% fragmented. Before diskkeeper, i would sometimes see as high as 65% fragmentation on a mule drive.

and here's a link to go with the thread:
Executive Software Diskeeper Diskeeper Workstation.ShareReactor.v7.0.407.rar

Downloading now :)
I guess it would be a good idea to start defragging more often.

The best virus scanning software out there is:
AVG.Antivirus.Pro.V6.0.474.Repack.Multilicense.WinAll.Serial.PeNdEjO!.rar

Adware programs:

SpybotSD Search and Destroy
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang ... e=download

Adaware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Diskeeper is good, and a fuckin shitload faster than windows default defrag, but I disable it in startup and do NOT use the background shit, it does make a big difference on my system, really slows it down. Not sure why tho a s my system is hi spec. I am always moving, creating and deleting files so I get a lot of fragged files, so I sometimes defrag every day or two, depends.

Okay, I would like to discourage XP users from using Disckeeper. I found out it was causing OS lockups, or at least the lockups i was experiencing stopped when i uninstalled it a few weeks ago.

Forgot to mention it after I uninstalled

oh -shit spud - I could have told you that !

Diskkeeper is utter unreliable piece of shit ! DON'T let it in the background running on a xp partition !
Unless you like sending your partition to hell !!

A friend of mine had to repartition half his HD because of this 'handy' little gizmo.........

RUNS sweet ................for a while................

You've been warned....

Sorry I ignored this thread so long....

man, u r good in ripping but sucks in hardware :-) jk.
but u rnot fully right in some ways.
at first Disc scan will not remove bad chunks or shit like that.
Disc scan repairs only logical errors. and it does not give a fuck about what is downloaded by emule. bad or good chunks. does not care
second.
i defragment not so often cuz even on highly fragmented drives it's not so critical.
and especially for drive where u store emule temp files. they r large.
and there r few of them...
and problems with them u can have ONLY with defragment programms and under NTFS. see below.
not like on my drive C where r about 100000 files. that drive really needs to be defragmented.
third. live. well.. it will sooner die after many defragments. cuz when u defragment it takes long time. and drive is really loaded -> temperatur increased.
forth - who has NTFS should not use Diskkeeper.
cuz like many other programms it leaves many emprt chunks between fileparts about 12kb.
in case of NTFS i suggest to use VOPTXp or Windows-defragmentor.
it's still one of the best.
5th. under XP running scandrive - it's not full.
cuz many functions r disabled. running dosdrivescan (he is in XP too) is better. much more better.

and remember. big partitions under FAT32 - shit.
1gb - 2 MB of ram.

last.
all that shit about - defragment your drive often - is good for software companies who make such programms.

hehe,
i'm no expert, but i do mess with computers a lot.
i just do what works for me and i was just trying to help. I wouldnt knowingly give out bad info. Honestly the way i do the above(first post) works out the best for me, and i think i got most of it off the edonkey homepage.
diskeeper has been doing ok, only problems is when its running in the background and starts when im doing captures. i didnt know people had so many problems with it.

am i just freakishly lucky in regards to computer problems? diskkeeper, zonealarm, old emule mods, defragging once a month, all the crap people have problems with seem to work just fine for me, in fact it usually works great, with little to no fiddling. a lot of my stuff i build myself, but could it be ive just been getting lucky? i take a picture of my computernest, and you will be both shocked and amazed at the amount of duct tape, loose wires, and household appliances that go into the monstrosity that is my setup. I never thought i was particularily lucky in life(i have had a suspicion that god has something against me. I'm going under the assumption that i was hittler in a past life.Karma.), but maybe i am just computerlucky.

na ur just making life really hard for yourself. In comparison, most likely people will be happily using super computers and you'll be trudging along on an Acorn

Zonealarm i'd ditch, use too much CPU I say! :D

yep.
Kerio Personal Firewall ownz.

well for video capturing and when u use not empty drive - maybe that had a sence.

but still Diskkeeper is software that makes many problems.
but as i said - for NTFS in general.

u r not lucky - u dont install many programms. dont experiment and so on.
so in that way your OS will live forever.lol.
most problems r cuz of many programms installed.

err, i dont do much with this computer, besides the above. its just too far behind the technology curve to run any serious programs at the same time as emule. thats all i use this box for.

as for messing with/installing other programs, ido that a bit on other computers, decompile and step thru some, winice them, edit them to be more 'monkeyfriendly' or just to see what makes them do what they do. not so much anymore, i been into just drawing pictures of naked women for some reason.
but i still got the basics of most things computer related, as all my degrees would impy, hehehHAHAHAHahaha.

i hadnt taken a pic of my setup yet, but will once i find my cables for my video camera. this computer isnt really in a case anymore, just spread out, connected to various things, cables and wires dangling everywhere(is that drive attached with bubble gum???yes, yes it is.). its less of a 'computer' as it becomes more of a 'room'. diskkeeper still seems to be working fine, as all my maintanance above still seems to be doing well for me. may have something to do with all my hard drives i built to be more or less cartridges so i could swap em easily with my other computers, so i dont notice diskkeeper fucking things up, but it seems to be working well.

been taking sygate firewall for a test run, i dont like it. it and peer guardian take up 100% of my cpu. its mostly because i been getting hammered by antip2p lately, i think.

yip,
ive heard a lot of good things about keiro. ive used a lot of those 'tiny' products before. that tiny trojan trap is nice, with all the details on whats accesing what. i usually run 2 firewalls and some anti-antip2p programs(like peer guardian), but ive just been getting hammered/molested by a couple ip#'s recently. i logged them all and complained to the isp, but they just want more money.

i guess delete this if its too much or against the rules, but here be the latest list o' nasties.
