I hate those. Is there an easy way to remove them, or do I have to install one of the many 'messenger service blocker' programs I get so many ads for?
I thought it had something to do with Windows Messenger, but can't seam to be able to remove that program.

The easiest way is to use a working operating system. There are several to choose. The most popular starts with an 'L'. But if you don't want to do the sensible thing, you could try to block ports 135, 137-139, and 445.

Start>run>type Services.msc

then find Messenger, second button>properties>disable

Any services your not using should really be turned off :)

How's it possible - your mule has Low ID but your Windows networking is wide open?

If you go for blocking and you're running XP there are also UDP port 1900 and TCP 5000 in addition to those that wargand mentioned.

Installing SP1 for XP gives you the option to uninstall Messanger from Add/Remove Programs.

I thought that was MSN messenger, not Messager service?

Messager is a network messenger program, if you load up command prompt, and then type:

net send localhost God damn M$

A message box displaying "God damn M$" will appear on the computer "localhost". What some ed2k servers were doing is adding the ips that connect in place of localhost and spamming with messages :(
