Mine has 1/3 CD/DVD but that just puts the filesize at 306 mb

Yeah I know, but I thought I might check it out anyway. You can never know enough about encoding. Looks like a tough read btw. Quote: | Jeez, how did we get from AFR through ARF to ADF? |
That's exactly what I thought.

Have you set CD size to 4.37 gb? There's a dropdown where you can select what Gknot's default 1-CD is.

Thanks, that did the trick

Sounds like a good idea to me.
I'll give it a try sometime but not on this one (yet). I wanna keep all other parameters and only change the CM to see what it does.

@TTMpeg smooth, not on its own. you'll probably want to do a slight bit of sharpening after it, but there's plenty of great noise removing filters.
in the past i've been testing out:
Code: | ############ # FILTERS # ############ #----------# ############ # Dehalo # ############ #blinddehalo2()
############ # Sharpen # ############ #pSharpen() #limitedsharpen() #limitedsharpenfaster()
############ # Denoise # ############ #Undot() #Convolution3d("movielq") #Convolution3d("moviehq") #PixieDust(5) #hqdering() #hqfilter() |
search doom9 or google for the scripts and required dlls. PixieDust is very good, and i'm just trying out hqfilter/RemoveNoiseMC. RemoveNoiseMC uses limitedsharpenfaster after removing the noise so on paper it seems like a good script.
Lux Delux wrote: | Are these noise filters really that important? |
if you have noise, well... yes, a noise filter will increase compressibility. If you smooth then sharpen you can restore some of the detail too.
I wouldn't suggest diving into using filters until you know what noise, etc. actually is. You should be using gknot and know what avisynth is too. If you don't, you need to switch to gknot, learn that, learn what avisynth is, and then have a play.
Matrix wise I tend to use:
Low Bitrate:
jawors 1cd
High Bitrate:
eqm_v3hr
jawors 2cd

I use Gknot and edit the srcipt before encoding. You might call it a hybrid method I guess. I just love that slider.
EDIT: ^ That's what you meant anyway, right?
So far we have 2 for 1/3 DVD and 3 for 1/6 DVD. Not very representative...
I have a new rip (1/6 DVD with Jawor 1CD) on my encoding machine. I'll see what it looks like, maybe tweak my script a little with some filtering and hopefully end up with a rip that can be released.
Matrices: I really like using mpeg on higher bitrates. It gives you a nice and sharp image IMO, with the bonus of maximum compatibility.

Since we're discussing things so nicely, here's another update.
Screen comparison Jawor vs H263:
H263
Jawor
H263
Jawor
The way I see it Jawor gives me more details (check the guy's forehead for example) but also more noise (check background on first screen).
I've also examined a segment of the movie with movement and Jawor looks clearly better (except for the noise part).
So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna use Jawor plus some additional noise filtering.
Anything specific you can recommend? I'm looking to keep the details obviously and lose some of the noise.
Help and scripts ( ) appreciated.

you could try...
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110078
Read the entire first post. Be careful with the noise filters, you don't want to loose any detail
of:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=51181
Jawor isn't *that* incompatible, just really shit mediatek chips. I really can't understand why people by that crap, but that's the risk.
If you have a standalone, try one of those INFECT vcdrips and see if it plays They were Jawors 1cd.
.....
I have this dreaded feeling that everyone's going to run away and try lots of filters now and wonder why they get error messages "can not find..." etc.
Anyway, after you get the filter, all the plugins and do the appropriate imports, load your avs into virtualdubmod, and then go to "tools>script editor". From here you can change your script and have a see what it does on the output frame.

Yes, the overall 'perceived' quality is better in motion if that makes any sense. spudthedestroyer wrote: | you could try... http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110078Read the entire first post. Nope, I used to have a Yamakawa 715 but now I have an xBox and no more compatibility issues. But I'll use Jawor. I did before with Plaga Zombie - Zona Mutante and got no complaints so fuck them mediatek users. Let them upgrade. I'll read the thread tomorrow and give it a try. Thanks. spudthedestroyer wrote: | I have this dreaded feeling that everyone's going to run away and try lots of filters now and wonder why they get error messages "can not find..." etc.

Thanks again. I hope I can post new (and better) screens tomorrow. I think my personal record is something like 10 or 12 rips of a movie before I released it. Damn, I'm getting more and more anal about this encoding stuff lately...

Yeah, perceived image quality is the most importent thing. I usually watch the entire movie on my multimedia machine before releasing it. It has a Matrox G550 (best graphic card for 2D apps IMO) and is hooked to a plasma (42"). Anything that looks good on that should look way better on a regular TV-outs/standalones. I'll examine this particular rip on the xbox aswell while I'm at it.
I'll probably post new screens (Jawor + noise filtering) later today or tomorrow. Can't wait to see what the function Spud posted does.

TBH I can't really tell the difference, although I guess that means I need a new pair of eyes. Can anyone get me a fresh working pair, good price paid

Off-topic but can anyone suggest a filter or series of filters that might work on the Faces of Death films? These are roughly 50/50 NTSC and FILM o neither IVTC nor forced FILM works, you either get interlacing or ghosting in certain parts of the film. Video-man gave me a few suggestions but I couldn't get anything to work to an acceptable quality.
