Frank Henenlotter

New York filmmaker Frank Henenlotter's small body of work has had a huge impact on splatter filmdom. He only has five full-length features to his credit, but they're all cult classics that were as popular on the midnight circuit as they have been on video.

His first and best film, "Basket Case," received plenty of attention in the early 1980s from Fangoria magazine, thanks to its strong gore content and (at the time) cool make-up effects. With some bad acting, classic dialogue and a stop-motion-animation monster, "Basket" was one of the funniest horror films of the era, and set the groundwork for similar horror comedies such as "Re-Animator" and "Return of the Living Dead."

Henenlotter followed it up with "Brain Damage" in 1988 and "Frankenhooker" in 1990. Both films had strong camp and gore content. By the early 1990s, Henenlotter busied himself making sequels to his lucrative "Basket Case" classic. His last film was "Basket Case 3: The Progeny" in 1992.

He has close ties to Something Weird Video, which is currently distributing "Basket Case" and a "Sexy Shockers" series, featuring films directed by other people but presented by Henenlotter.

Review: A guy goes about New York City carrying his deformed, homicidal twin brother in a basket. Weird little film with an extremely low budget and a most unusual premise shows promise, but poor performances and awful effects, not to mention a rotten ending demolish whatever chances it ever had. Followed by two sequels that were even less in quality. Rated R; Graphic Nudity, Graphic Violence, Sexual Situations, and Profanity. (Quote from IMDb)

Review: In the overall mainstream horror business of the 80's, the few movies directed by Frank Henenlotter were an absolute relief and a breath of fresh air. His movies are weird tales that take place in dark and depressive surroundings. The budget he spends on his productions are kept very limited but that really gets compensated by a lot of creativity, inspiration and humor. Brain Damage actually has a lot in common with that other quickie of his, Basket Case. Except that this movie is a lot more light-headed and Frank inserts a lot more comedy aspects here. But not your ordinary kind of comedy. Twisted and perverse humor is a better term to describe it. (Quote from IMDb)

Review: Two words: exploding hookers! A Hennelotter classic! This was one of Bill Murray's favorite movies (I remember reading a Fangoria article with Hennelotter telling Bill Murray constantly catching screenings of this movie). And who could hate a video box that had a button to press to hear "Wanna Date?" 10/10 a pure classic. (Quote from IMDb)

Review: Frank Henenlotters over-the-top, gory sequel to his 1982 surprise hit "Basket Case" must be seen to be believed, but it might not be the best idea for common moviegoers! I think Henenlotter goes way to far in the portrayal of his "freaks", coming to a point where the trash that is this movie touches some real-life problems of society that won't be solved that easily. The special effects, this time supported by a much larger budget, are plenty and not always easy to stomach. (Quote from IMDb)

Review: Shot back-to-back with part 2, this final entry in Frank Henenlotter's trilogy suceeds in bringing crudity and tasteless make-up effects to new heights. Unfortunately, it doesn't always deliver, because many scenes are way too stupid to be shown to a thinking audience. It has some funny parts as well, but it's only recommended for the most die-hard splatter movie freaks out there... and, maybe, to those who think they've seen 'em all... Ranks as one of the weirdest movies in the history of U.S. cinema for sure.

Plot Outline: A young man whose parents are currently in jail for murders that parasites in the father's brain compelled them to commit finds that dear old dad wants to pass on the family legacy.

You could have made this a "Frank Hennenlotter collection"
Because besides the Basket Case trilogy he only has "Brain Damage" (aka "Elmer") & Frankenhooker!

ok, as you wish, here it is... 8)

the release dates of BC 2 + 3 are pretty fucked up. every movie review page gives another date. so, in this collection i stuck to what IMDb says (for my rips i took the dates written on the dvd package).
thanks to krug who gave the last part missing. :beerchug:

@Spud: you can delete the BC collection if you think it necessary. the details are the same here.

Dead or retired is my bet

He wrote something for a tv series in 1997, so maybe he's retired.
