| Wishmaster (1997) | | Review: An evil genie, the Djinn (Andrew Divoff), escapes from an ancient statue and wreaks havoc in this horror film from director Robert Kurtzman. The devious Djinn can regain human form permanently if he grants someone three wishes. The Djinn at first is trapped in the statue, which falls and cracks open when a drunken worker unloads it from a ship. The genie is inside a precious gem, which a puzzled pawnbroker gives to university gemologist Josh (Tony Crane). The Djinn kills Josh, and Josh's friend and colleague Alexandra Amberson (Tammy Lauren), who had been resisting Josh's romantic advances, sets out to find the killer. She follows a trail of carnage, and she soons learns the truth about the genie from anthropologist Wendy Derleth (Jenny O'Hara). The Djinn presents itself to Alexandra, who resists his seductive offers to grant wishes, but then the fiend sets his sights on Shannon (Wendy Benson), Alexandra's younger sister. The genie makes his final stand to grant a third wish at a party where antiquities collector Anthony Beaumont (Robert Englund) is displaying the statue. |
| Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies (1999) | | Review: Andrew Divoff returns as the evil Djinn bent on world domination in this "too good for cinema" sequel to Wishmaster. Released from his prison gem during a failed museum robbery, Djinn transforms from a gooey blob to a demon in human form after granting his first venom-laced wish and takes the rap for the heist and a couple of murders. Meanwhile Morgana (Holly Fields, looking like a B-movie version of Angelina Jolie, without the lips) is haunted by nightmares of the demon and discovers the meaning behind his command, "Fulfill the prophecy": he needs to bag 1,000 souls and then he's Armageddon-bound. Like its predecessor, Wishmaster 2 twists the classic genie-in-the-lamp legend into a sick joke; every wish is granted in the most literal terms, leaving the recipients victims of their own greed and desire in often gory spectacles. The budgetary constraints are evident in the more ambitious effects, notably a calamity of biblical proportions in a Las Vegas casino with computer-animated locusts and unconvincing dismemberments. Divoff makes a low-rent Freddy Krueger, tossing off pale quips with a tight grin and in a raspy, self-important monotone in this Nightmare on Elm Street knockoff. Best to stick with the real thing. |

| Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled (2002) | | Review: Viewers may find some marginal entertainment in the Wishmaster series' fourth entry, which attempts to cast its perverse anti-hero, the Djinn, in a sympathetic light. However, silly plot developments and childish splatter effects undo whatever interest is generated by the premise. This time around, the Djinn is summoned by a woman whose boyfriend was crippled in an accident. He assumes the form of her lawyer and offers her the standard three wishes, two of which bring her a healthy settlement and a boost to her sex life. However, the Djinn?s generosity comes with a price: when he grants the third wish, more Djinn will be released from Hell to bring destruction to Earth. But in order to do this, he must make the woman love his true form (a horned demon). This nominally intriguing idea is bungled at every turn by hamfisted scripting and performances, making Wishmaster 4 a must-see for series completists only. | [ Add all 7 links to your ed2k client ]

Hehe, I know. I just found out it's on his worst movies list.
Anyway, I've been thinking of making a Puppetmaster collection and maybe posting that on the frontpage as well...
