I don't want to announce that the back end of the server has been sorted out, but at this time 2:59pm GMT, i can get on the UEC thread:
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=6967

Seems to be functioning correctly again. Whether its going to have trouble under load again we will see.

I have tried twice now and accessed the UEC both times.

Today is a very busy day concerning issues. I got this 30 mins ago:

Quote:

Apache/2.0.59 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.59 OpenSSL/0.9.8d Server at forum.dead-donkey.com Port 80

And the frontpage told me the site was experiencing database problems around the same time.

you can barely run command line arguments, the box they put us on is barely better than the last, and ends up with 6mb free memory (!!!!). The 500 errors we've had for months are all down to shitty hardware, or rather too much on shitty hardware.

There is absolutely nothing i can do apart from repeatedly complain to our host. :(

Very annoying.

Cant say what should be done to fix it, it's just weird having sooooooo much swapspace which is hardly used.
Also the load is pretty high all of the time.

My guess is, that there are a lot (I mean a lotlot) sites hosted on it.
Or (or maby even and) it's a very slow machine.
Or it could have severe hardware problems, like a faulty raid set. One of our webservers we rented had that problem, it's was goddaaaamn slow cause of a faulty harddisc.

But without seeing the complete setup I can't really say what the problem exactly is or could be.

I've emailed a few times when the sites got the 500 error, but I think that no matter how many people email them, even bombarding them with 1000 mails a day, theyre not interested. Theyre making their money & thats all theyre interested in. I suspect that even if spud threatened to move to a different company they wouldnt care so its just one of those things & we just need to get used to it :wacky:

This should now be resolved, and MySQL is running with quite a bit of spare capacity.

Seems this went on to cause a bigger issue and the server was restarted. Unfortunately that glitched several tables on the database which i've had to repair.... *sigh*

thanks for reporting this, this has now been fixed.

It was poor coding.

The problem was i was using a rather crude url to resize for low desktop resolution users. It was appending &lowres=true to hide the right bar; unfortunately on pages like search.php they can be hit directly and that means its ?lowres=true.

I fixed the whole thing by simply dropping the &lowres=true, and storing the variable in _SESSION.

Search.php, news.php and whichever else was playing up should be accessible directly again.

Some topics didn't get marked as read, not by clicking and reading them, and not by clicking the "Mark all topics read" button. I noticed this in the FAQ and the High Quality sections.
