As you might have known, we've been having a spot of bother trying to find a decent, reliable host which is made all the more problematic by the nature of this site. Unfortunately we exist within a space where the site traffic is too much for a standard shared box, the donations are too low to get a dedicated box (which would solve everything :( ) and its difficult to source a VPS. With no offers for hosting, we've had to try our luck finding somewhere that can support the site. At the moment we are on a burstable shared box which gives us the cpu/ram, and its located way offshore (which unfortunately means a bit of latency for europeans).

So this all leaves us with a sticky wicket (not the deficated ewok, i believe its a cricket term) on supporting the site (costs

So here's a few ideas:
Merchandise
T-Shirts are available, although no donations make it to the site until a quota is reached:
Image Image
http://33417.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Shop/
You should be able to take the logo and apply it to your own design, effectively donating $8 to the operating costs of the site

Another possible merchandise line would be something like keyrings, for a small price (say, £3 + p&p) this can be made and dispatched easily and we can take it as small donations.

If there is interest, please voice it.

Other merchandise becomes difficult due to cost and requirements to bulk order. Things like mousemats require runs of 250, whilst spreadshirt and similar have very limited options in terms of design.

Ads
Something I've always wanted to avoid, but a run of ads may provide some contribution towards maintaining costs. Something simple like google ads text links perhaps on frontpage entries:

I am not really a big fan of the ads, and is reliant on click-throughs which aren't always attainable.

Pop-ups are strictly something that will not be consider.

Rewards for donations
Another possibility is a donators usergroup that will access to some other kind of section of the site. Suggestions would be appreciated, certainly something like relaxed rules, etc. is a possibility.

Feel free to contribute, criticise or be insulted.

How about some more relevant ads from companies that sell horror DVDs? That could easily merge into the site design without screaming of itself.

Do you know any companies that do that and actually pay out? Google ads are probably the most reliable ads specialists around. I suppose Amazon would work.

Although i don't like ads, google ads seem IMO a good way to get some cash to keep this great site running.

Any interest in the keyrings? I have 10 made up now on my desk. It is Dennis the Dead Donkey on both sides. Currently there is one in cirulation that I use as a keyring :)

How about something we can give back to donators? Any ideas.

If advertisements would be displayed like they are in the example, I'd go for that - relatively unobtrusive.

I'd be willing to click on 1 link per visit if it would bring revenue to the site.

I think Google Ads are fine if the site needs it.

I have nothing against google ads because they are not offensive. However I don't think you'll get much money for that. As far as I know you receive around 5 Euro Cent for one click. This site is mostly visited by selfish leechers. You would have to rely on us clicking them over and over again.

Concerning rewards for donators I know a site where that displays some additional images (stars) below the avatar/name of the user everywhere. They get a bouncer for the IRC channel for a month or so. Unluckily the IRC channel of HHAH is quite dead.

I was thinking more of a "Blockbusters" Non-Horror section or something.

No, not really. I guess you could ask around at Xploited or similar. But then again, perhaps it's just too much trouble compared to Google or Amazon. Was just an idea.

I know what you mean.

I need a partner. But enough of my personal life...
:googley:

I think i'm going to setup store.dead-donkey.com to put some donation options up as well as putting all the merchandise in one place. Sound cool to everyone?
