What a mess... *sigh*

I'm against clearing topics except some very particular cases (like help threads with unsolved problems, because this creates the need for another thread devoted to the same problem). What's in there is each topic's natural development. Sometimes you can delete 2 or 3 off-topic posts and nobody will ever notice, but sometimes the main thread and all the off-topic banter it contains are inseparable.

I also think this thread belongs to site help/dev section...

That thread is fine, there's nothing wrong with the replies as they stand.
It just needs the link ammending to the first post, that being because the Bride of Chucky listed is dead. Ideally there could be filespecs but it doesn't matter that much. However, any discussion revolving around the file contained in the topic, the films in the topic or the topic in general should not be touched.

I don't see the problem with what bassline said here, a little straying from the topic keeps it fresh in this case, and doesn't affect the thread as a whole, and it doesn't matter if that's the case in any other thread. The problem is that some of the collections are majorly offtopic and incoherant, and with a lack of a strong, structured first post, the topic is a mess.

I'm not anti off-topic, that would be highly hypocritical of me

Hope that's clear now.

Very true, and that's why I leave it 90% of the time. As long as the topic generally stays on topic it's best left alone.

For claification, navigating some of the collections for links, or rather the total lack of any ability to navigate () prompted the split :)

For example, the video nasties thread is almost verified. It just needs a menu system of named anchors to make it a bit easier to browse. ie.

<a href="#1">Film Title1</a>
<a href="#2">Film Title2</a>
<a href="#3">Film Title3</a>
<a href="#4">Film Title4</a>

That is despite the fact it still doesn't have all the links. The thread can be updated whenever they become available, but it is as complete as it can be :)

Okay, I'll add a menu system sometime next week and do some updating :)

you mean like one post locked in a forum, and then the replies cross posted?

I dunno, it has been mentioned but locking and splitting is an ugly and inappropriate way of moderating the way I see it. If the links should change (board upgrade, new url, whatever) then the whole system falls flat on it's ass. I really don't think it's good practise to implement a split forum like that.

The thing is though, there's no real point to doing that either. If the first post is moderated then it's fine whatever, it doesn't need splitting or locking, it can be just placed in the verified collection section, replies and all.

This is an attempt to give the maintained collections out and into the public eye also. If someone put in the time to make a topic, then it deserves to be seen :)

Any other suggestions are welcome about how to handle it, but I don't think splitting or locking is relevant, replies are fine, that's not the issue, it's trying to make the topic as a whole structured and easy to navigate.

Maybe I should kidnap my HCI lecturer?

so, the problem with my Troma collection is all the replies? I think I've put all the links in the original post, and even tried to make it nice and browsable.. ugh, spent so many hours on it.

There should be a warning somewhere about starting new collections. they can be a hell-of-alot of work to maintain!

I dunno, haven't had chance to check the troma one. It should be fine. I'll check it in a minute. Once again, replies are not a problem if the first post is maintained. If you want a topic moving, pm me, a mod or bump your topic.

Navigability people

edit: The troma collection is perfect --> verified :)
