Short, our registrar is still bundling the change but i've got the old nameservers updated... you won't need a hosts file entry anymore, so please do remove it or it will cause lots of trouble down the line

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open with notepad -> remove any line that mentions dead-donkey in it :)

Thank you

It won't let me save the changes. It says: "Cannot create the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Make sure that the path and the filename are correct." What to do now?

Make sure it is NOT write-protected.

If it was write protected, you wouldn't have been able to change it in the first instance, but that's a good thing to check.

if you are on windows 2000 or nt:
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

if you are on *nix:
/etc/hosts

If you mean you can see the file, but can't save it, you need to do it using whatever editor you did last time. I simply used notepad:
windows key + r
notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

If it says you can't save it and its not write protected/read only, you are either:
using the file elsewhere in some other program, close it to release the lock
you have an overbearing security package that has locked it, close it to release the lock
windows has it locked, clos..., you'll probably have to reboot...

BTW a nice freeware utility to check for locks is called Process Explorer.

Download that, go to find>Handle or Dll and type in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and hit return; it will tell you what is using it. :)

I'm on XP.

I know the path of the file.

I can close it, but the changes won't be saved (and thus, the hosts file entry for dead.donkey will remain).

The only change I have noticed is that there ar e several backupfiles made of the hosts file, they are all called something like this: hosts.20080708-130104.backup. And they were all made on one day, a few days back.

Another thing that has changed is that Spybot Search and Destroy has added 100s of sites into the hosts file.

Problem still is: I can't remove the dead.donkey hosts file entry. I doesn't let me save and while I keep trying, it says "hosts. This file exists with Read Only attributes. Please use a different filename." Which of course results in the hosts file NOT be changed.

read only attributes? right click the file, uncheck read only, then try again... :)

Or use a text editor that doesn't care if its read only

ipconfig /flushdns
from the command line too for good measure :)
