What are you using these days for downloading/uploading movies?

I'm pretty much 100% nzbs, its the least hassle to use, its content and retention is huge and varying and its by far the most simple and time-efficient way of getting content. It can utilise 100% of the download capacity without flooding upload, there's no banners, ads, crap-site navigation to go through. The downside is that for such a great system you've got small fees to access the servers (ie. you have a small isp like fee), which given the low cost of isps these days is pretty much a subsidy on isp fees.

The problem I have is that uploading is a bit of a pain and I'm looking for something as simple as sabnzbd for uploading.

HTTP direct downloads hasn't really evolved from warez sites 20 years ago, its full of forced clicks, wait times, disconnects, password protected archives, deadlinks, fees, subscriptions, unverified content and just eats too much time. Throw in that you have to pay for segregated providers (ie. rapidshare, etc.) to really utilise it, there's no advantages over nzb and a lot more negatives.

Private ftp I haven't used for the same amount of time

Torrent I don't use, its inefficient and slow, clogs up your line beyond reason, has often snotty communities, fixed ratios, etc, and is closed and segregated as a network meaning accessibility and availability is severely compromised.

ed2k just doesn't seem like an economical choice anymore, the ratio, filtering and upload/download restrictions means its not such a fast alternative, clogs up your line permanently and just doesn't seem like a good modern alternative for content acquisition. It is however, open and singular and a harder beast to kill.

I'm not downloading so much anymore. It seems like I'm satisfied with what I have, and most stuff which comes out new is rubbish (the occasional exception exluded, of course - for example Triangle). If I download, I'm still using the mule. I don't like direct download, I don't like to pay for downloads and torrents die too fast for me.

Everything! :P

Downloading:
NZB is by far the most convenient, but I focus on what I want and not on the downloading method. There is no way around torrents, emule, ddl links if you want to stay on top! Torrents are unavoidable for untouched DVDs and HD. I know what NZBs have to offer and it's my first choice, but tons of rare things are available only on torrents. And there are also some DDL blogs with interesting stuff that's not available anywhere else. You don't need to pay for DDL, use something like JDownloader and the whole process is just a click.

And I still use the mule a lot for downloading!

Uploading:
Again, NZB is the most convenient. There are no easy and efficient one-click uploading apps yet, but it's not that complicated either. After that 90% of my upload bandwidth goes to the mule. And then some torrenting to keep my ratio on the few private trackers where I'm in.

If you don't use p2p, then you are getting old!

I stopped using ed2k after mldonkey absolutely died performance wise and then I moved to spain. Torrent, too much micromanagement but you are right, mainly due to alienation/ignorance/'old ways' people privately share rarities on torrent so you have to go through the ballache of jumping through hurdles to get stuff shared.

I've been thinking of setting up an upload 'bridge', where people can essentially upload to a server and it propagates it onto newsgroups. If there was a decent uploading application I could quite simply setup a script to achieve this.

Best of all worlds.

eMule, NZB, torrents and DDL. SOmewhat like:

60% eMule, 20% torrent, 15% NZB and 5% DDL. And having said that I've never uploaded anything to NZB or DDL, I'm using those mainly for downloading. And the speeds on eMule I'm getting now have never been so good as it is now. :beerchug:

Mostly eMule - also my exclusive releasing network. :)

NZB for running series, some DVD sources, sports and the like.
BT mostly for untouched sources.
Some DDL.

My download queue is pretty much empty, so it's mainly about uploading atm. I only use aMule, because my torrent account was disabled for the tracker saying that I have not shared anything - which is of course false. :prat:
Everything that includes payment is out of question, as I believe that things should be free to get.

99% newsgroups (Giganews/Newleecher): everything
.9% ed2k (eMule Morph): music
.1% torrents (uTorrent): random thing I can't find elsewhere

I don't mind paying a little over what I already pay for ISP. The speed and convenience are well worth it.

For a couple of weeks I was 100% torrents (finally got a CG account)
Before that, I was 30% ed2k and 70% rapidshare.

I cannot agree with you more.
I tried to resist the allure of private trackers, but once you get that taste of CG crack, you're hooked.
I've leeched off at least 100+ gigs of of CG and I intend on sharing them via T3 and ed2k.
Rapidshare is cool for some shit, but uploading is a bitch. Maybe i'm lazy, but I like the idea of just pointing my client to a file on my HD and doing nothing else thereafter.

bumperty bump,
so any ideas on what we can do to keep people in the modern?

ie.
how can we encourage more nzb usage/coverage on the site?
would a tracker be beneficial? (not a fan of this idea)
how can we encourage more posting?
should the site remain free to view on the forums or should it require a free registration to see all forums?

and on the off-topic:
1) are there any community features that would increase your usage of the site?
2) is there anything that bugs the crap out of you about the site?

I'll stick to eMule. I'm not really downloading anything nowadays. I'm tired of all the recent shit movies. I'll only download from now on when you/the community say that the movie is good.

If you add the mandatory registration feature, we will lose all members coming from google and the site would really be dead imho. I mean, I found this site via google back then.

What would make me use the site more often, would be more active members I think.

What I noticed is that most things are indexed twice by google. There seems to be a http and a https version of everything. (enter this in google for example "masque of the red death site:forum.dead-donkey.com")

You get a security/certificate warning when clicking the https version. I think those https entries should not be in google at all.

Anothing thing: there are many links not working on the main page (www.dead-donkey.com). I'd like them to be removed or the content to be added. No sites with "this is under construction" or so.

I think the link to the FORUMs (which is the main part of this site) should be highly visible. If I look at the main page now and imagine that I am a new visitor, I can highly believe that I would not find the great forum section. It is just a simple link like any other one.

    - how can we encourage more nzb usage/coverage on the site? : Maybe starting an Unseen #2 (or any other group for that case) If people see more nzb posted they are more likely to use them and find out about the advantages it has then they'll probably are more likely to start upping to newsgroups themselves.

    - would a tracker be beneficial? : Dunno, some people are 'scared' of eMule, think its way to much work to set it up right and would much rather use torrents for their downloading needs. Maybe a partnership with a open tracker like T3 or similar to see if that would work out.

    - how can we encourage more posting? : Thats a tough one, been going over this myself many times, I think the main thing is that they need to have a feeling they contribute something to the forum. Maybe adding post/movie rating, adding reviews, fanpages, ... to posted movies, that kind of stuff.

    - should the site remain free to view on the forums or should it require a free registration to see all forums? : IMO the best way is a complete open site but nowadays it just doesn't seem smart to keep all things open and visible. Maybe do something like we've done on SBiG, everything open except the sections with p2p links in 'em.

    - are there any community features that would increase your usage of the site? : Not really but I always love to see fanpages, reviews and talk about movies that are posted

    - is there anything that bugs the crap out of you about the site? : no

I'm not interested in NZB and I'll keep using the mule as long as it gets supported/updated and everything.

We need more members indeed. Sometimes I return to these forums after 3 weeks only to see a few posts which have been made, whereas on other sites I need days to read up on everything I have missed. I feel like I am one of the very few people posting movies here. I bring movies from FH, but since I have been very busy lately, I can only do so in batches, which is not good, because then I'm missing some everytime.

A lot of the older members have more or less retired, it seems. Sometimes they come back to post one or two things and then they are gone again for months.

On the visbility I think I have to agree with pure.

I'd also love to see a permaban on all those damn spambots. Or some kind of Berlin Wall or something.
