So, I've been reading for the last hour here about
stand alone divx players. The popular choice is I gather
an X-Box because it is very modable.
Assuming I don't want an X-box, is there any other
good choice? I see new players recently claim to be
Divx Ultra certified (so very fancy). Have the new players
become a bit more stable than the ones from 2004? I've
been reading about the Phillips DVP-5140 and many
people seem to be fond of it.
Does anybody here have any practical experience with
the newer players? After reading many a spud rant about
converting MPEG4>MPEG2 loss of quality combined with
my utter frustration of dealing with skipping home made
DVDs from AVIs, I'm ready to make a leap. TIA!

I have 3 standalones, all philips brand.I own the 5140 and it is heads and tails over the old dvp 642.I also have the upgrade to the 5140 but all it is is the 5140 with a usb port.I would recommend getting one...plays everything inculding Qpel and GMC encoded movies, it also read vobsubs so I don't have to encode them down anymore to an srt.Pretty good for under 50 bucks.

I can't understand why you wouldn't get the xbox it plays :
Wikipedia wrote: | XBMC can be used to play/view all common multimedia formats 'straight out of the box'. It can decode these in software and optionally pass-through AC3/DTS audio from video to S/PDIF output to an external audio-receiver/amplifier. For a detailed up-to-date list see the "Supported Formats" list in XBMC online-manual here. Currently the supported formats/codecs include:
* Container formats: AVI, MPEG/MPG, WMV, ASF, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, M4A, AAC, NUT, OGG, OGM, RealMedia RAM/RM/RV/RA/RMVB, 3gp, VIVO, PVA, NUV, NSV, NSA, FLI, FLC * Video codecs: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, 3ivx, DV, H.263, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, HuffYUV, Indeo, MJPEG, RealVideo, QuickTime, Sorenson, Theora, WMV, Cinepak, * Audio codecs: WAV/WAVE, MP2, MP3, AAC, AACplus, AC3, DTS, ALAC, AMR, FLAC, APE (Monkey's Audio), RealAudio, SHN, WavPack, MPC (Musepack, a.k.a. Mpeg+), Speex, Vorbis and WMA. * Picture/image formats: BMP, JPEG/JPG, GIF, PNG, TIF/TIFF, MNG, ICO, PCX and Targa/TGA

Considering they can be picked up for ~£35 in the UK, there's not a standalone that can touch it

Well, one reason I was trying to shy away from the Xbox
was the lack of an optical output for DTS/DDS for my
home theater system. Sadly I also see that the Philips DVP-5140
lacks the optical output as well. I guess the alternative there
would be to hook up two players to my receiver. I probably
should look and see if that is even possible....
Also, I've see here as one of the stickies your modification guide
guide for the Xbox. Must you modifiy it to play the divx files?
Thanks so far for everybody's response!

Yes, you have to mod it.

erm.... /me looks at his xbox linked up to his receiver via optical output erm.... As pca's specs clearly states: PC_Arcade wrote: | It can decode these in software and optionally pass-through AC3/DTS audio from video to S/PDIF output to an external audio-receiver/amplifier. |
If you have component inputs you need something like:

If you don't have component:
link
etc.
There's plenty of alternatives on ebay and its well documented on any page that will mention XBMC. Have you read up on it or are you just looking at the back of an xbox? Seriously, go to the xbox media center website and have a look, you will not find a better player at the price. You'd be expected to pay several £100 to get something close to the performance.
methinks you need to read up on the xbox's ability and give it a good think through ; a pretty standard Component wire is all you'd need for optical out. Its the same with any console i've seen, they transfer all video/audio over a proprietry plug which splits to differing outputs. The bandwidth of the port is very high and designed to carry digital output. You get a xbox to composite as standard, which doesn't look very good really on the screen, you would need to buy a component cable which carries optical out too.
Of course you'd need to modify the xbox to put unsigned code on it Its hardly rocket science so don't take it as a big deal or a mountain moving task. I did one just before xmas in about 5 mins
And to answer your question, no i've never seen a standalone that isn't either a pc or an xbox that isn't competely and utterly shit.

Wow. That thing is a monster. It seems to do
everything except make you some coffee in the morning. You should
let us know how it works out when you get it all hooked up.
