Things you need :

An xbox360 with a Toshiba/Samsung Drive :
Image
A Torx 10 screwdriver
Thin Tweezers (or similar)
A PC with SATA connectors - but NOT the Silicon Image Sil3112 SATA chipset, these will not work (ATM?)
A Hex editor - I used : http://www.hhdsoftware.com/Downloads/he ... -free.html
The Firmware package ( ed2k: Xtreme.Package.rar  [188.7 Kb] [Stats] )
A certain degree of recklessness
Some plasters

Part 1 - Taking the box apart

There are guides to this all over the place, I used this one as it was the most accurate and easy : http://www.informit.com/articles/articl ... 6&seqNum=2

At stage 10 stop - DO NOT unscrew the black screws, leave them alone, they hold your heatsink on, all we need is access to the DVD drive

Part 2 - safety first

You will need a boot disk, so format a floppy disk ensuring the box that says "MS-DOS system disk" (or similar) is ticked, when this has formatted copy MTKFLASH.EXE and MTKFLASH.TYP from mtkflash183c.zip to this disk (if you have an nforce4 motherboard use the same files from the archive MTK-NF4.RAR)

Your xbox360 will need to be plugged in (but turned off) next to your PC
with it's DVD rom drive powered by the xbox, but connected to port 1 of the SATA on the PC

remove / disable all IDE channels except for the floppy disk and all SATA ports except port 1

make sure you have set the PC to boot from the floppy disk

turn on the PC, leave the 360 turned off for the time being, when you have a command prompt tuen the 360 on and type the following on the PC

mtkflash r /m backup.bin

press 1 to select SATA master

This will backup the original firmware to the disk - DO NOT LOSE OR MODIFY THIS IN ANY WAY, if you screw up you can easily restore the original firmware with this file and put the 360 back to factory

turn off the 360 and unplug the drive from the PC.

Plug the pc's drives back in / reenable all the applicable ide / sata channels and boot into windows

Part 3 - modifying the firmware

Each 360 DVD firmware has a unique key that marries your drive to your console, this HAS to match or the drive will not work, so we need to insert the key from your firmware into the modified firmware (which has no key).

Copy the backup.bin file from the floppy to your hard disk

Load the Hex editor then load backup.bin into it from your hard disk, the area containing your key is located at $4000-$4200 so press ctrl-G and type 4000 into the box, then click goto.

Using your mouse select everything from 4000-4200 (as pictured)

Image

press ctrl-C

Load the file from the Xtreme_Package called xtreme.bin, press ctrl-G type 4000 into the box and click goto

Press ctrl-V this will copy your key from the backup firmware you created to the xtreme firmware ready for use on your drive

save the xtreme.bin file onto the floppy disk

Step 4 - The scary part

Connect up the 360 to the PC as before, unplug all the drives again, boot off the floppy disk and at the command prompt type

mtkflash w /m xtreme.bin

Press 1 to select master

The 360 should at this point be hacked

In order to test whether it has worked, put an original game in, it should play as normal, then put in an xbox copy if you have one, it won't work, the emulator will say that thi game is not playable (or simillar), but it will recognise it as a game :)

If it did, put the 360 and the PC back together, put the plasters on your bleeding fingers and thumbs as needed and move on to the next tutorial - How to create backups for use with this firmware hack

Hopefully not needed part - Troubleshooting

My drive won't boot anything  originals say "insert in an xbox 360"

You've messed up with the key double check that you overwrote the are $4000-$4200 not inserted - the firmware should always be 256kb

My PC won't recognise the drive to flash it

Try another PC, or use a promise SATA PCI card, mktflash compatibility seems a little "flaky"

There's a compatibility list here : http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?opt ... opic=794.0

This now works with the Hitachi drive, but until I can get hold of one to mod there will be no guide :(

This needs updating, there are versions for all drives now, although the principles are the same :)

Hmmm. If you have the PC connected to the 360, you should be able to access it from the PC as well, since a PC is a more general and thus more powerful tool.
Have you tried to search for this on google? If nothing helps you could take out the HD, put it in an external HD case and connect it to the PC with USB. :googley:

Can you please do that PCA? I've got an open 360 here that I've had to fix & I'd love to softmod in such a way as its not gonna get banned on live.... the DVD Drive is a Samsung TSH-943 x800473-016 & the only reason its in bits is coz my boy wore out the drive belt so it wouldnt eject.

£3.16 for a new belt from Maplins, ugggh! :voodoo:

I can, but I'm gonna need a little while to recap etc. the good news is it's MUCH easier now (unless you have a lite-on).

There's a really good (and MASSIVELY comprehensive) guide out there though, so it may be better if I just link that TBH

I've cracked it & heres how I did it.

To prevent anyone else from struggling like I did, you need to make sure you have the following programs.

1. You need to install the PORTIO32 drivers: http://www.360xtractorpro.com/360xtract ... 32_1.4.zip
The installation guide is here: http://www.360xtractorpro.com/360xtract ... stall.html

2. You need to be using a 32Bit version of windows (I used XP) & have .net framework 2.0 or later for XP or 3.5 for Vista.

3. Dowload Jungleflasher from here: http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html

4. Download Ixtreme firmware 1.6 & put the firmware inside the firmware folder in the jungleflasher folder: http://www.ixtreme.net/downloads/ixtrem ... -t167.html

Keep your xbox DVDrom powered by the 360 & plug the SATA into your PC & boot both & if youve done it right, when you run jungle flasher & choose the correct I/O you will see your 360 DVD Drive.

Note: I found that plugging into this board with a GForce chipset caused the BIOS to crash on POST but in the other PC with an INTEL chipset it worked fine.

The best guide I found for using jungleflash to flash the SamsungDVD Drive (Mine) is here: http://www.ixtreme.net/xbox-360-tutoria ... l-t40.html

The jungleflasher tutorial for all other drives is a pdf here: http://www.ixtreme.net/download/file.php?id=72

Tested & working. This should allow you to play wave3 games.

I just bought an elite xbox 360.

Is this still valid? Is it worth it? Will this get me banned from xbox live?

Post subject:  Re: Xbox 360 firmware hack tutorial

Theres a lot of factors involved now Spud.

There was just a massive banwave that got up to a million people banned from live. I unplugged mine for 6 wks & seem to have avoided it but its still a risk.

If you have a brand new 360 then you may have a newer version of the liteon drive that requires soldering to hack/flash.

An older 74850 liteon requires a ck3 kit & probe to extract the key although the liteon released between the 2 others is hackable with software.

The latest firmware for hitchi is 1.51, samsung/benq are 1.61 & liteon is 1.6.

1.6 wont play wave4+ without using an activation disk burned to DL disk.

The bans this time around seem to have in most cases caused issues with the HDD, disabling the ability to install games to it & corrupting the saves/profile should you wish to move the HDD to an unbanned console (to stop you getting achievements). This has been fixed but requires soldering to the mobo & creating an LPT link to the pc & using some random software to uncripple it.

There is/was a new fw in the pipeline thats meant to be undetectable, but team jungle/c4eva had a massive bust up that has caused confusion about wether this fw will actually ever see the light of day.

The banwave is over, some are saying its not a wave & that its a constant trickle, but I dont believe that to be the case.

I guess you need to check what drive you have if youre considering modding as its gonna cause extra expense in the short term if you have 1 of the above mentioned models of liteon.

Post subject:  Re: Xbox 360 firmware hack tutorial

I'm not ultimately that bothered, I *buy* a lot of games these days, I just like to try some stuff from time to time...
I prefer Steam to buying games in shops, I will never buy a FPS on a console over the PC version and same goes for most third person games.

Hate sports and most simulation, as well as arcade games... I really just got one for a couple of games, Fable 2 being the big one. I got a 1080p projector too, so its easier for me to hook up a 360 than run a wire to my pc.

Sounds like I shouldn't bother and will just buy less games.
