Post subject:  Tips on Harcoding Subs onto an AVI

i've recently got a Divx compatible dvd player, but it doesn't appear to support SRT files. so i'm curious if anybody knows of a good way to re-encode an AVI to hardcode the subs in there. I've found some guides online, but they seem to be assuming I want to make DVDs... i'd like to keep these files as AVIs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :beerchug:

as a follow up, i found a bit more information on this..

http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_filters

the Subtitler filter for VirtualDub can allow this to work, but you must use SSA subs...

so you can convert SRT to SSA using this program:

seems ok, although I've noticed that subs that are supposed to be in italics actually have the I and /I tags surrounding them.

Yeah I get that when i use certain programs, think they are not designed for the format that the subs are in and therefore do not allow formatting

ouch i would really suggest you wouldn't. Re-encoding will take a huge dive in quality. If your doing direct source -> hardcoded, its slightly better but compressibility is greatly effected (essentially, its like badly cropping, you introduce subs that Xvid is very bad at compressing [drastic change in colour, its like more edges]).

Anyway, are you absolutely sure your dvix player can't be firmware upgraded to support them (a lot can)? How come you didn't just get an xbox?

well i'm very happy about my latest discovery...

i did a little digging on the doom9 boards and found the proper way to load subtitles on my standalone player!

apparently you must first highlight the subtitle file, hit the subtitle button on the remote, and THEN start the movie. you can't enable the subtitles once the movie is already playing.

it works pretty well. so... no lame hardcoding for me!!!
