Any MMOs worth playing?

I've never been into MMOs in a big way. I used to play a zelda ripoff called "Graal" (originally it was called Zelda online) but they went payware and all shitty. There's all this buzz around mmos and to be honest, most of the ones i've played are absolute shite. Things like Second Life are such poorly made pieces of junk, they are practically unplayable and yet they are infested with people.

Some of my friends play Eve: Online, which is cited as the best MMO out there. The problem is it looks way too engrossing and over the top. Its a space strategy but its not really something i'd want to play.

Are any of you playing MMOs, and if so which ones and why?

It doesn't look my cup of tea to be honest, is there a free trial?

I registered for the Lord of the Rings online beta but haven't heard back yet.

you got a review or key for the LOTR:O beta because i've not heard that at all, its obviously not polished? wow beta was a mess too, but googling its all pretty positive apart from trolling, but i couldn't find any full writeups either.

If its personal...l *cough* send me your key *cough*, if its that bad i take it you won't want to play again :)

Try this, http://www.lotro-europe.com/stresstest.php

There's a new client, and a new test this Saturday, if you're unsuccessful, let me know, but I want to try the new client first (and win a lovely prize  )

I played Star Wars Galaxies when it first came out, but it got real
boring after awhile. They never updated quests enough to keep the
game interesting enough. It really just became a complete treadmill
game (mining minerals/making crafts/selling/repeat!). The game I hear
has changed completely since I was on. They changed the combat system
which I hear is horrible. It is all a real tragedy since Star Wars has a fairly
deep mythological base to it. They could have made it so much better.

The only other one I've played is Guild Wars. It has a nice balance to it.
You can't get too crazy with powerful weapons/spells. It has a very Diablo
feel to it (but much prettier) and is nice to play in groups. It also has
the benefit of you buy the game and then you play... no monthly fees.

Hope this helps!

To be honest, the only two mmos ive ever played were WoW, and EVE. Ive been playing WoW for 2-3? years now, and it still keeps me interested. I played EVE for 5ish days on a trial account...didnt really like the combat system. The downside of WoW is the monthly 15 dollar fee, but i think its totally worth it. They are always coming out with new patches that add new content to the game...dungeons, quests, etc. If you do decide to play WoW, play on the server Blood Furnace  Its a new server, so there arent tons of players in rape-your-mom gear yet. Im "Proto" on that server. :beerchug:

i know two people that have been playing eve for over 2 years now, but that kind of strategy where you can't get out of your ship and run round shooting people isn't really my thing

heh heh yeah i feel ya, also didnt like the way you couldnt actually controll your ship, you just had to click a point in space and tell it to go there.

The only next gen MMO that has me interested is Age of Conan (I actually run an AoC guild that is getting prepared for Beta). The beta application process started a few days ago (sign up here if you're interested). The game is set to launch on October 30th this year. If you don't know anything about AoC, watch these videos to get an introduction to what AoC will offer:

Developer Commentary E3'06 (Part I | Part II)
HD GDC'07 Walk Through (Part I | Part II)
HD Gameplay Preview (Here)

Here are some of the highlights of what AoC brings to the table:

  • Skill based combat system with 6-directional attack for sword swings that you chain together for more devestating attacks (also a similar spell weavings system for magic)
  • Collision detection and formation combat (these in combination should do a lot to kill the holy trinity in dugeon crawls)
  • City/Battlekeep building (ie. actually meaningful PvP, when you're definding what is yours!), with real seige warfare (including trebuchets)
  • Great graphics system (DX10), actually looks next gen
  • Drunken brawling (fun pvp where level and stats don't matter, only the type of alcohol your drunk on)
  • Dark mature world (NO elves, dwarves, pansy crap) The world is based loosely on the earths own prehistory (think 15,000 BC lost civilizations)
  • Decapitations and other gruesome fatality moves!
  • Mounted Combat!

That does look and sound pretty amazing :o

Now if only Ralf Moeller did the voice of Conan, it would be the best game evah!

Yeah i've been watching that one, it looks great but its had some really bad news... a dumbed down console version and the flood of children being one of them :(

Looks good though, i'll sign up and have a look if its an open beta :)

a thread from times long gone; i have absolutely no time for mmos anymore. I'd have to quite my job and get another one to pick up a game that wastes that much time anymore.

I still manage to slot in single player games now and then though :)
