This is a question i've been asking around my usual haunts, but most recently this has been sparked by the release of the Blade Runner ultimate collection. I'm pretty sure I want to get this in a HD format but am still not sure which.
Now the big red herring in the whole HD vs. BluRay has been the PS3, without it the BluRay format would be dead, in terms of sales, HD-DVD very much seems to be holding its own dispite not having a subsidised console tacked on to it.
The issue seems to be, some of my favourite... I mean all time favourite movies are exclusive to HD-DVD. Army of Darkness, and ultimately the entire Evil Dead franchise is HD-DVD only (updated: anchor bay seems to have screwed this over, evil dead 2 is available on bluray). The Thing is HD-DVD only, etc.. On the flipside, American Psycho, for example is BluRay only. An annoyance.
One advantage the HD discs seem to have is that studios like Universal are doing a backwards compatible disc, so you can play in ordinary DVD players. in the future this won't be much worth, but in this early stage it makes it all the more tempting to buy a HD-DVD version of a new title and always have DVD to fall back on when lending/sharing. Personally, i don't find this very necessary but i do lend my films out.
From the discussion at fileheaven, someone mentioned this and i think this sums up HD-DVDs appeal over bluray:
Quote: | HD-DVD is by far the 'nicer' format, no region code, no mandatory copyright protection, plus its specs were finished before it was introduced to the market. |
As far as quality of players, with the exception of the playstation 3, HD-DVD is cheaper and usually better quality. Similarly, the discs in comparisons are fairing up to the point where the HD-DVD at this moment in time have better and more mature features, as well as picture quality that matches and sometimes surpasses bluray (despite the extra storage space).
If it wasn't for chav zombies diving onto the playstation brand this might all be roses by now, but unfortunately its not that good. Unless the PS3 flops majorly with underwhelming sales over the next 12 months (ie Metal Gear Solid is delayed/ported to xbox360 which is likely, GTA IV has already been delayed leaving sony's lineup dry for xmas), I fear that its going to drive bluray sales. As a movie fan, i'm being selfish here obviously.
Its almost as if some of the big HD-DVD players need to persuade microsoft to speed up (as the rumours go) plans to do an integrated HD-DVD player for the xbox360 to counter.
I have zero interest in the playstation 3 as a console but if bluray won, being the most stable player its a bit more appealing, but I fear its console appeal is going to prolong the HD battle and maybe even tip it in blurays favour, although I think some people are a little over confident about its abilities to do so. Consumer adoption for both formats combined is still pitiful.
So that leaves totally confused and annoyed as to what's going to win and what's the better format, highly annoyed that i can't get all the titles i'd want on a single format. I like to buy things I like, I find there's a bit more value to having an original disc to a rip or a copy (quality and what not).
So the Blade Runner, among other things, release is coming and i can't feel that DVD isn't enough for it...
So, are any of you in either camp? do you own a HD medium player? are you as annoyed as i am that there are two formats? Are you planning on joining a format soon? What upcoming titles are making you consider doing so?

This is something I have been asking for some time as well. I think I'm just going to step back and let this HD AND BLURAY war go on. Then buy the player that is victories in the end.
But I would have to say, I'm leaning at the HDDVD more. But I'm still on the fence right now.

Me wants Blade Runner and Evil Dead & The Thing.
So I'll just end up buying a combo for my pc.
My reason for going to buy a ps3 has nothing to do with blu-ray vs hd-dvd. Its solely based on Resident Evil 5.
And yes I agree that it entirely sucks to have 2 standards.

Ouch, not that i like saying that might have been a fuck up/etremely premature, but its coming out on the 360 and probably will be better like most of the dual formatters The videos are all from the 360 version too, which is always worrying
On top of that, RE5 isn't out until 2009
GTA IV 360 has already 'won' with the exclusive downloadable maps/content, etc. Although i hope there's a pc version very quickly with the lack of exclusivity.
GTA IV has been delayed.
Seriously, there's one game to buy a Xbox360 over a PS3, and that's Metal Gear Solid IV. There's substantial rumours that will not be exclusive to playstation anymore, and given the sheer cost, i think that's garanteed.
Metal Gear solid IV isn't out until late 2008.
I think buying one now is a waste of money, given how shoddy the lineup is. You'll get a hefty discount next year too.
This is why the statements of PS3 being the sole contributing factor to winning a format war are slightly exaggerated

Argento, based on suspira anyway = Dimension Films right? = Universal = HD-DVD exclusive.

Yes, that sounds about right. I have heard some rumours about future HD-DVD releases for Argento. Something about a pristine Suspiria film print being prepped for a release next year, which might be on HD-DVD. It makes sense I mean if they are going to start with Argento it might as well be Suspiria. But Tenebre would be a dream.

Me? No way! I'm not even gonna buy an XBox360! (by my choice I should have clarified "to play with" not that I would pay money for it)
But yes people still buy porn discs, I know I know, but if no one bought them, noone would make them, so therefor noone would rip them, so noone could DL'd them
Y'know, it hurts a little to say I trust M$ over S0NY!! Hvane't had a S0NY product since PS1, and my uncle worked for their corporate office... I couldn't have gotten freebies, but never wanted them ok I never asked for them.
No the most I've done is rent it (back in the 90s ) I actually don't watch much regular porn anymore, I like pics of tender young eighteenyearold flesh! Or I could just roll ontop of my woman and hump

My take on this subject is to wait a while and see which format wins, whichever one does will get all the films released on it anyway. For now, access to 720P HDDVD\BluRay rip movies on the net will have to do (I only have a 720P TV anyway...) but these are easier to acquire on BT than ed2k. 'The thing' I have already downloaded, as well as 'Shaun OTD' and 'The Descent'. All fit on a DVD and all look superb, heaps better than the old HDTV rips. Once the hybrid players cone out at reasonable prices again I shall be proud to give Carpenter\Pegg\Marshall my monies again, but I won't imagine that will be in the next 12 months....
If I had a 1080P TV, it would be a different matter, and I would probably go the PS3 route, just to try out all those ps2 games I missed

From what I read I'd say HDDVD, but like more people I'll wait and see first. For now I have enough with standard DVDs, and I buy them only very cheap. The future will tell me what to do next. Anyone remember the glorious introduction of CDi?

I've just read something that has confirmed that I will likely never buy a Bluray player, even if its the only surviving format I'll probably not buy discs any more instead of buying into a format that will lead to a company that actively censors content and maintains tight control over the format:
http://www.computerworld.com/action/art ... Id=9008579
Quote: | The company will not allow its disc-replicating subsidiary, Sony DADC Global, to handle adult film titles, it said this week. In markets where Sony operates around the world, it won't duplicate any movies that are above a certain rating or that have not been certified by a local motion picture association. |
This format just sounds like bad news for horror; nearly all disc production goes through sony

I have the HD-DVD add-on for the xbox 360. I've bought about 5 HD titles. They look nice, but they really don't look that nice that it's worth buying my favourite films all over again in a new format.
I was fairly excited by the whole thing initially, but now I'm bored with it. That's probably more down to the opposing fanboy camps making the whole thing look ridiculous. My opinion: Neither will ever replace DVD but remain a high-end toy for AV geeks.
