Is there any way I can make it possible for my DVD player to show subtitle files? Right now I can't watch Japanese flicks because I don't understand a word of it as my player only shows the moviefile.

I have a pretty standard Sony DVD player.

on a dvd? press menu then go to audio usually.

i assume you are talking about xvids with a seperate sub file on a shitty standalone though? Frankly i wouldn't be surprised if there was no support for any subs, however, if it does, its likely its only srt or sub in plain text, non-unicode only. Check the manual for your divx player.

I'd strongly suggest building a htpc or buying a modded xbox (1), there's no issues with basic functionality like this.

You assume right, although I think my DVD player is not shitty (even while it is a Sony :P). I'll check the manual. The xbox will not be bought very soon as my priorities for spending money are elsewhere. I'll keep it in mind though. Thanks :beerchug:

Couldn't tell you what to do with a sony..I got 3 philips brand divx players and I could go into all sorts of detail about that...Main thing I would check out is sony's website and check their forum or faq section and see what type it supports..There might be a firmaware patch that they released that could help you...Also to remember that the sub files have to be the same name as the original avi.My philips will play all the sub formats and pretty much 98% of what I got...pretty good for a "shitty" dvd/divx player and really good considering what I paid for it.

Thanks, man. It was much simpeer than I thought. There's actually a button on the remote control to toggle different types of subfiles  . Now I can do even more with my shitty dvd/divx player! :beerchug:

On my toshiba you select the subtitle file first, then select the film & it plays with subtitles

On my philips all you do is hit the subtitle button on the remote and it plays them...consecutive pressing will bring up other languages for sub/idx format.

on my xbox apart from allowing you to bind any function to any button on the remote, playing any type of subtitle, changing the default position and saving that, changing the default colour and font, etc, you can also search automatically inside rars for all sorts of subs... You can also point at any directory to look for subs

that is why your standalone is shitty, next to that it really is ;)

ps. and sony are shitty too :p
