Earlier I installed ntune application: http://www.nvidia.com/object/sysutility.html

This monitors usage & temperatures on nvidia based boards (nforce).

After an hour of playing half life 2 ep 2 I exited the game & to my surprise/shock heres what was reported:

nforce chipset: 124 degrees C
GPU 1: 84 degrees C
GPU 2: 72 degrees C (I have 2 gfx cards in Sli Mode)

This board doesnt have a fan on the northbridge, its one of those new wierd ones with a copper bar across it with a number of heatsinks.

How hot does yours become?

:o

I'll benchmark and report back; my northbridge gets WAY too hot and its a known problem with my board but the cpu and gpu don't get that hot i don't think. CPU is like 30 C max, GPU was about 60-70C

Okay, I'm running the nforce / ntune tool now which is supposed to push my pc to the point where it either locks up or crashes.

At the moment its overclocked my PCI-E bus by 15%, and my graphics card temperature is a mere 75C constant (that's a 2C raise during 15mins into a pc stress test).

My CPU is at 23-25C, system is at 52C

Looking through the nvidia tools, there's a feature to turn an alarm on for the graphics card, that alarm defaults to 120C being the max temperature for an individual graphics card.

I havent tried using the tool youre talking about but I will tomorrow.

120C sounds incredibly hot & I wonder how long a gfx card can last at that temperature before something fries :o :wacky:

It does sound very high, what tool is reporting that temperature to you? You sure its not F? 120F is about 50C which sounds normal

Are these tools good / reliable? I used to enter my BIOS to tell me the CPU & memory temperature.

I agree: 120°C seems way to high.

ntune is about right, or at least its reporting the same as my bios for temperatures. Problem with exiting to bios is that you have to shutdown and the fans usually whir up on startup.

I've found the best way, providing you have a reliable tool is to play with your analysis tools on another monitor (providing you have more than one). Its usually best to shut down additional monitors in games cos you loose frames other wise but when i'm benchmarking i'll leave it open.

Don't know what bad is using though, which is why i'm curious about that. 120F would be fine, that's 50C which is usual for fanless chipsets.

Was the option you used 'System Stability Test' ?

No, its C not F:

"Tune System" which starts overclocking everything, then i put it on 2hr stability test.

What type of ram are you using?

A matched pair of 1gb DDR2 1066 Crucial balistix sticks in dual slots.

I cant see a tune system option, is it hidden?

Just finished playing crysis (for about an hour)

CPU is 10(!!!???!!!)-30C, GPU is ~78C

@tune option, you have to accept license agreements in ntune.

Yeah, I found it after I posted last night but after running it & it crashing me hard to the point only a cold boot would get me restarted the options simply vanished. It crashed coz it had doubled my cpu frequency :o
Since then my reported memory frequency has dropped from 1064 to 804 :(

I've had a play in the bios & tried that AI BoosterII. Both manage to speed things up incredibly but nothings stable & I cant get the memory back up to 1066 :wacky:

I know this board isnt meant to support 1066mhz RAM so I was pleasantly surprised that it was reportedly running at the right speed, now its running at the board specified 800 instead.... any ideas? I've reset the bios to defaults & uninstalled AI boost.

Incidentally, AI boost is reporting the system temp at 30C so that says ntune is reporting wrong for the nforce chipset which is a relief :)

its supposed to crash, it keeps tweaking settings but the only way it can find your limits is by crashing your system, did you not read what it is doing? Let it crash, it takes about 3hrs to keep tweaking that's including crashes. You have to check the resume after crash box. It then quickly moves up to a stable overclocked setting and continues.

I was suprised you had bought 1066 FSB ram its usually very expensive and boards that support it cost a fuck-tonne too, I was going to ask if you were sure you've not crazily overclocked some 800? That will explain why your northbridge is set on fire; your cpu/memory controller is there.

Now that you've said your board isn't supposed to support 1066, it makes sense why your board was on fire.... just incase you don't know what your northbridge does its mainly everything you'd want to overclock:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northbridge_(computing)
It handles the cpu, memory and PCI ports ;)

Yes, I know it was meant to crash my system to set itself up & the resume box was ticked but it crashed so hard that the pc wouldnt restart without cold booting (unplugging the power lead for a few minutes). After I got it to reboot it didnt resume the test & the options in ntune were gone.

The initial frequencies reported were from a fresh build with bios defaults & reported the memory as 1066mhz. Its only since ntune went wrong that its now dropped the memory to 800mhz. I've tried going back to stock again & the memory speed has reduced.

I'm not an overclocker, have only fiddled a little bit in the past so I dont know what to change to speed things up except for changing multipliers & cpu frequencies & timing on the RAM. Those online guides talk technobabble so its confusing. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showth ... t=17612922

I dont think the northbridge was on fire, I think ntune was giving false readings.

Maybe ntune is more intel CPU friendly than AMD.

well if it was "defaults", just clear the CMOS by shorting the jumper on your motherboard. That will return it to 1066.

I'd be utterly amazed if it did though, if you have a 800Mhz board, and you clock it to 1066 its going to burst into flames.... particlarly if its fanless!!!!
