Oberon, your standalone, what's the make and model? I can make mpeg4 content that will most likely be unplayable that shouldn't be. Just need to start checking quality improving features.

It is a DVP5140/37. I've been pretty happy with it so far. I'm sure you
could make some unplayable content but why would you want to? To put
this in perspective, I don't have an HD tv, just a normal 31" TV. I'm sure
you would start to see some artifacting on a larger/higher def. TV but
that is not my concern ATM. So far I've DLed nothing that wouldn't play
in the 5140. In all fairness, I also tend to grab older movies. Most of
the newer ones I just can't stand.

As for subs, are you using .idx and .rar ?

I'm not sure if I've tried .rar. .idx and .sub files seem to work
just fine.

XBMC is a pc, but with a excellent (read: unsurpassed which is why there's huge appeal to get it ported to linux) interface designed for media playing.

I won't debate you there. I think XBMC is a great solution for playing
media files. Just not the only one. I think Slayer said something similar
in this thread. Also, I try to keep reminding myself that all this wonderful
media is free! So, even if I have a little hiccup now and again, I can't
be too disappointed.

Using a mouse and keyboard is a tad shitty to be honest, I used to do it myself using pc+tvout. Was a worse option in the long run |
Nah, they come with remotes now! The IRBlaster or something like
that. Why does eveything have to be 'blaster' or 'extreme' now a days.
Geeze, it's just a frickin' remote...
