Is it possible to mod the cube without a chip yet, using only an AR and required files?
What you mean you didn't read through all 16 pages and figure it out

This thread is my Gamecube hacking diary, it's quite fun to read back over it. For me.

yeah I did, but lost the plot once PCA started using an Action Replay and mentioned that he didnt need to network into the cube. Also there was a lot of maxconsole posts that I was too lazy to read up on :)

yeah, if you have an action replay ?15, and an official memory card 59 (or 225) you can boot up with those and not need a mod chip.

Problem is you need to use PSO and a bba to get the files needed onto the memory card, so you still need access to a bba and pso.

If you have a bba and PSO, then you can just send a tiny file across the network each boot and play pirate games off of a DVDr without a mod chip.

All in all, there's only really any point to buying a modchip if you don't want to do disc swapping, or can get a gamecube + mod chip cheaper than gamecube and bba/pso, or gamecube + action replay and official memory card.

The cheapest is the action replay and mem card option, but you need to get someone to set it up for you initially.

I completed RE4, would have done much earlier if it wasn't for all these DRE. I got a bit worried when I thought it was going to turn out to be samey, but they spiced the gameplay up a lot and I was impressed by a lot of the environments. Just as always too short... there sure as hell is going to be a RE5.

I'm stuck on disk one still

oh that bit, the one where there's the guy with the red cloak in the middle? Then he says something and they try and flank you.

That bits easy, get your pistol out at first, take shots at the two guys running straight at you. One of the guys will come round to your left, kill or at least floor him (shoot them in the leg), then run round to the side and turn round (since the rest will be following you). Keep shooting at the bastards until they snuff it. If they get too close, shotgun time, but when you get in trouble, run off and then use (analogue back + b) to turn round quickly.

Stay in the first half of the room (before the steps), and you should take em all out really easy like if you keep on the move. If you go down the steps, iirc, it triggers the next lot to come after you.

That rooms fun too :) Once you cleared them out, make sure you've been saving up sniper ammo, you'll need it ;) Send the lass up to your right (as you head towards the pond), then jump across onto the first platform and turn back, makes it easier to cover since they can only get you from one side, and you get a view of the action.

That's a long way from Disc 2.

You guys haven't seen yet? Cobra went 1.0 and it's no-swap
Code:
 ≥                        - COBRA FOR VIPER GC V1.0 -                       ≥

 ≥                                                                          ≥

 ≥                            1st of april, 2005                            ≥

 ≥                                                                          ≥

 ≥                                                                          ≥

≥  So, you were wondering what was the surprise in Cobra 1.0 ? Well...     ≥

≥  We are proud to give you the very first Gamecube BIOS that works        ≥

≥  Without swap. Seems that the Viper GC was unwittingly 2nd Generation    ≥

≥  from the very  beginning, since we made nice use of the lid switch      ≥

≥  sensor cable designed by the Viper Team. Thanks guys you made it easy   ≥

≥  with your foresight, for us to make the Cobra BIOS swapless. Don't      ≥

≥  mess with the disc & lid anymore. Turn on your console and play.        ≥

 ≥                                                                          ≥

 ≥  FEATURES                                                                ≥

 ≥                                                                          ≥

≥  - Direct boot of all media, without swapping!                           ≥

≥  - Automatic Media Detection: Insert disc, turn on GC and play!          ≥

 ≥  - Supports all regions PAL / USA / JAP                                  ≥

≥  - Play originals or backups from any region, thanks to the built-in     ≥

 ≥    region-free feature                                                   ≥

≥  - Idle-bug free (no more Disc Read Errors when the drive is resting :-) ≥

≥  - Unique MultiBoot feature: put several games on one single disc!       ≥

≥  - Disc Explorer to browse the content of original GC discs or DVDs and  ≥

 ≥    that allows you:                                                      ≥

≥      - To flash your Viper GC by burning the flash file on a DVD         ≥

≥      - To execute homebrew programs (.DOL) from DVD, and enjoy many      ≥

 ≥        already-released homebrew productions!                            ≥

≥      - To flash your Viper GC by burning the flash file on a DVD         ≥

≥      - To run the game you want from a MultiBoot compilation             ≥

≥      - To load cheat codes from disc into Viper GC Memory                ≥

≥  - Powerful Cheat Code System compatible with Action Replay codes,       ≥

≥    codes are stored in the Viper GC Flash so no memory card is needed!   ≥

≥  - Cheat codes can be either entered using Cobra Menus or loaded from    ≥

≥    a file using the Disc Explorer                                        ≥

≥  - BIOS Configuration stored into the Viper GC Flash                     ≥

≥  - Selectable default boot action (Main menu, Boot disc, Original BIOS,  ≥

≥    Disc Explorer) and special boot action (when the X key is held)       ≥

≥  - Calls Original BIOS Game Loader for 100% compatibility                ≥

≥  - Supports all hardware revisions (including DOL-101 units)             ≥

 ≥  - User-Friendly GUI

And it works too. No more DREs on previously DRE ridden games! Direct boot works too! But...

Code:
≥  - If the disc stops spinning in the menu it means that the drive can't  ≥

≥    sync with your media, or that there are not enough data on your disc. ≥

≥    In direct boot mode the GC is very selective about the media it       ≥

≥    takes. If you have any problem please try the swap trick. If you      ≥

≥    still have problems try with different media/burner. Make sure your   ≥

 ≥    laser is correctly tweaked!

And guess what, Datasafe direct boot no problem, but none of my Datawrites will direct boot, but work with the swap trick! I told you Datawrites were shit!! Maybe I should have tried to convince you in a better way than saying they were thicker :P

I read through this whole topic, and have no idea what the hell is going on.

I just bought some minidisks, and I understand you have to do a tweak with a laser to get a burned game to work, but then you don't have to stream it if it's burned, right? *Is so confused*

Its perfectly simple, there are 3 main ways to boot:
Mod-Chip
PSO + BBA
Action Replay *

Mod-Chip:
You pay for a mod chip, at ???, you then take your gamecube to pieces and solder it all up. This costs probably about as much as PSO+BBA, but you'll be limited by hardware (but at this stage in the console lifecycle, it doesn't matter). You can boot without disc swapping.

PSO+BBA:
Costs ~?50 to setup, you need PSO I+II (one game), and a hard to find cheap BBA. This way you can stream games, via your broadband adapter and run lots of custom software, backup memory cards, and loads of useless junk. You need your pc/router near your gamecube. There are still issues booting many iso.

To boot you put PSO in, you then set up your network settings to go to your PC. On your pc you run a loader. You start up a net game on PSO. It dials your pc, now there's two options:
1) your pc sends the iso, and it loads from that. Has problems with FMV,etc if your not on GB ether setup.
2) your pc sends some loading software to the cube, which gives you the option to boot from disc

Action Replay:
No BBA adapter is need to run this, what you need is a) an official memory card b) an action replay c) a friend with the above BBA/PSO combination. This is by far the cheapest and trouble free method imo. What you do is use the action replay to boot the same software you'd use via the bba, but instead it comes from your official memory card. Basically if you want to do this (recommended), you need to just take your official memory card to a friends, he will do a two second saving of files to it and your done. To boot you put your action replay in, you load a 'cheat' called action replay (which tells the action replay simply to look at the memory card instead of the disc. You press start, open the lid and close it, it then loads the loader from the memory card. This then loads the loading software, and there's an option to boot a backup, which is just putting in your pirate disc when it asks.

For each, you may have to open your gamecube and just fiddle with a screw to tweak the laser. In the end, I didn't even have to, and my cube is a bit more compatible than PCAs and Krugs. But I don't think PCA had to really tweak his laser in the end.

Recommended discs: Bulkpaq, cheapest + zero problems really.
Recommended Friends: people with BBA+PSO

* Need PSO + BBA once, for obvious reasons of putting the software on the memory card.

Booting with AR
Tweaking the laser

you might want to make a note in red at the top, if they only want a simple boot option, and have access to a BBA and don't own one, then the cheapest and simplest way is to buy an action replay and get a friend to fill it with their bba. That way its only ~?20 max.

It kind of reads that you need all of the things listed, when its just an action replay and an official memory card if you take that route. I suppose you can put, stuff you need (at least once) or something as the title for the stuff you need.

Apart from that reads well, simple to follow.

I might pick up a chip, the lates cobra bios supports multigame ISO's and audio fix in the BIOS.

It's almost too good to pass up
