I play this old game (BF1942) and lately it has gone choppy on me. I defragmented my HDDs ( also for other reasons) and I reinstalled the game, but the choppiness sticks.

I don't feel like reinstalling Windows again.

What other options/solutions do I have?

Try updating your video card drivers or nforce drivers.
If this doesnt work, go to their support forum & see if theres any update patches you can install.
If that doesnt work, read their forums to see if its just you having the problem.

Alternatively... upgrade the PC :shadey:

Upgrading drivers always makes a mess out of my PC and it has often done more harm than well, especially for playing BF42.
The newest patches are already running. Since this is an old game, it is not supported anymore by EA, another one of those companies who want your money and then run away.
Upgrading the PC for such an old game is ridiculous.

But thanks for the suggestions anyway

Try lowering the graphic detail in the game or the resolution.

Thanks again, but tried that as well. When it comes to letting games run smoothly, I'm not as n00bish as when it comes to ripping ;) I think I'll take that forums tip of yours and search for forums where people are actually still talking about this game (ouch, that's gonna be hard).

You'd be surprised, thats a very popular game.

One thing... The reason they release new drivers for video cards is to add support for the newer games although occasionally, a newer driver can stop an old game working hence forcing you to rollback :?

Yup, I know, I had to rollback twice.

If upgrading your graphics card drivers does more harm than good then there's something seriously wrong with your pc and I'd suggest a full format :(

Are you uninstalling your existing drivers completely, then rebooting and installing the new ones>?

I have done that once, yes. The second time I tried to just update the drivers. Both times it didn't work.

I have this glimpse of an idea that this problem might be linked to another chat we're having: the one about PG. Maybe that is causing the glitches in my game. The choppiness I'm talking about is like this: game starts up, all is fine, I play for several minutes and then I have a glitch. The glitch takes 2-3 seconds, then everything is back to normal, but when I was in a plane, divebombing some tank, I'm dead now. This is quite annoying, as you can imagine ;)

I switched off PG to see if it makes any difference.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, I assume you are playing online? I used to play BF1942
on a few different servers and I would get a lot of choppiness, and not necessarily
from a high ping either. Do you get choppy on multiple servers. Also have you tried
just playing the campaign to see if it does the same thing?

In campaign it is choppy as well, but I haven't tried that since turning off PG. What I noticed online yesterday after turning off PG, was less choppiness. I only had few glitches, which come from PunkBuster checks, I think. This is the best I can get I suppose.

I'm interested to know if the game runs smooth in campaign after removing PG from the system.

I'll try a campaign/instant battle soon.

I did instant battle just now and to my surprise the experience was choppier than the last time I went online. More glitches, and I have tuned down the graphic settings already, etc.

I'm gonna try out another time with less bots (which is stupid, I remember playing against this number of bots fine).

Google has it, that a lot of people's problems with Bf1942 are resolved after they removed their soundcard :wacky:

How about your drivers for your onboard sound? I had a problem
a little while ago with Neverwinter Nights that was solved by
a reinstallation of the sound drivers. Probably a long shot...

I played online yesterday again and it was OK. I'm really surprised by the fact that the choppiness bothers me more hen I play an Instant Battle: you'd expect such a thing when playing online.
