Anyone else giving google chrome a try?
http://www.google.com/chrome

At the moment this browser is windows only (booo-urns!), and there's a number of things I don't like, like the look and feel...

It is, however, rather fast... faster than firefox which has been faster than IE and opera since its 3.0 iteration. What it seems to like is extensions, which is firefox best part... however, I'm hoping with google behind it they might get their asses in gear more than opera could.

Using it now. Definitely fast, but it seems a bit 'jerky' when loading pages. Not a big thing, but it's a bit irritating on the eye. If that's the worst I can say about it, it's pretty good. :)

I like chrome, now I'm waiting for the extensions.

I think the speed is from what it lacks. If I remember correctly, firefox 3 was just as fast until I threw in a bunch of extensions, and unless I'm missing a secret area, chrome lacks a good bit of functionality.

I'll be sticking with firefox for now, but if there is a new/better way to do what I want... I'll be the first in line.

I'm with Avanze. I'll wait until an official release comes out. I'm pretty dedicated to Firefox
so Chrome is going to have to provide something I really like that Firefox doesn't. And I mean
more than the Omni bar.

I'm gonna have to check this out... google hasn't done me wrong in the past.

Chrome pisses me off. cant select text to quote selectively, can't get java working, doesn't open applications in facebook (Opera doesn't to it for me either - have to use FF), while using one of my mail boxes it sorts the letter in a strangest way possible, and some other things. but it looks nice and is quite fast.

Did anyone fire up a packet sniffer (like Ethereal) to see if this thingy sends your URIs to Google? Is this googles ultimate attempt to protocol everything you are browsing for on the internet or am I paranoid? :googley:

I'd say your are paranoid; next you'll be one of those guys that takes a line from the EULA, take it out of context and omit the rest of the eula, spin it and then use other people that have done the same thing as evidence

Its open-sores so download the sourcecode:

Do not be that guy! :shadey:

I didn't know it is open source. I have to take a closer look.

But you have to think about it this way: why does Google pop up with another browser? They have been supporting Firefox. What is their benefit? Are they planing to add advertisements based on your URIs. Maybe it is just a huge experiment to see if people like their Web 2.0 potential/innovations before some huge other free tool shows up. :watchingyou:

Hows about...

because firefox won't optimise the engine for google (see the quotes from the firefox team about the release of chrome)
because its google policy to spend 20% of your working week on a project other than your core job (which is where google Earth, gmail, etc. came from)
because they can

You know what? I, I like Chrome. Yes, yes I do. I just downloaded it again yesterday and I really love it. The speed, the simplicity of it all. I am a diehard Firefox fanatic, but lately with each incremental update it is becoming more bloated and sluggish as a consequence. Whereas Chrome is lightening fast. I must be getting impatient in my old age dammit. But if you think about it, if the Internet is becoming more and more faster, why shouldn't the browser follow suit? I do miss the mini search engine though, but I hear third party plugins will be available in the near future.

Oh, one last thing, you know the new Yahoo page, all jazzy and beta? Well some of its features don't work with Firefox at the moment, but all work perfect with Chrome. Hmm...

Edit: Oops, I just realised I bumped a year old thread. Sorry about that.

How much memory does it use when you have, for example, 8 tabs open?

Post subject:  Re: Google Chrome

It forks into different instances, range from 5mb to 70mb. Best way is to try it...

This most likely depends on the sites the browser has loaded. Images can take up large spaces of memory.
That's why my 512 MB notebook tends to slow down when I have more than 10 tabs open and there are other applications running as well.

Chrome is way ahead all the other browsers when it comes to multi-tabbed browsing. There is A HUGE performance difference between Firefox working with 10+ pages with videos and/or javascript/ajax intensive sites vs. Chrome doing the same.

I still use Firefox, because I love my addons! :P

I can always keep FF for using Chatzilla, and change to Chrome for normal browsing. Then again, selling still another part of my soul to the Google devil makes me itchy all over...

When Chrome gets support for more web based programs and other stuff than FF, I'll have to switch (people at Google, this is a hint).

Yeah, I have Chrome as default browser now, and just use the old Firefox as needed.
