why in the name of greek buggery would i want to hardcode subs and why is that considered good (and why is it better than just using avisynth to do it if you were that way inclined)? why wouldn't I use Gknot + xvid / x264?

Indeed. Hardcoded subs are teh suck.
Most divx players or XBMC should be able to deal with sub files at this point.

Seems like another vapourware encoder, unless there's some quality / encoding algorithm/codec its using that better than the average?

Reading the home page for Gomlab, it kinda looks like it is useful for encoding files for
types of formats besides DVD/Dvix. They highlight converting files for PSP, IPOD, home pages,
etc. Why anyone would want to watch movies on such small screen is beyond me. I don't know if you can do those
types of conversions with Gordian Knot. I've only ever used autoGK for the few items that I wanted to rip.
