Self explanatory really.

I have a little bit of money and I have two choices, mainly for GAMING.

1 - Upgrade/replace my PC with something like a core 2 quad thingy with 4 megs of ram and a decent nvidia card 8600 (basically what I need to play GTA IV).

2 - Get a chipped Xbox 360.

So, I have not really strong feelings about this. I just want to play GTA IV and other sweet games.

What do you guys think?

Me thinks that "4 megs of ram" is going to be too few.

depends, the PC if cost isn't an issue, the 360 if it is.

Core 2 quads are actually getting cheaper by the day.

I would choose, without a doubt, the PC. For me gaming on a pc is X times better then on a console. But that's only a matter of opinion/what your used to. Some mates of mine only wanna game on their consoles.

I had exactly the same choice, the only thing that had me doubting is Fable 2 and apparantly its out on the pc early next year. Of the top ten metacritic games for xbox, 8 are out or coming out on pc, and 1 is rumoured.

So i'd definitely get a pc, based on the fact that I'm definitely getting a pc instead of an xbox now :)

Alright. So I guess is PC then. ;)

Is my specs ok? Do I need something more?

I'd go for 4Gb not 4megs  which is what Redveil was saying ;)

Given the current state of PC gaming, I'm not so sure it's as cut and dried any more. GTA IV has just shipped, broken out of the box.

Just because a game comes out on the PC doesn't automatically mean it's better or even that it works!
PC gamers have been getting shafted, more and more recently :(

I'd MUCH rather play on the PC, but it's a fact that a number of recent ports are absolutely shocking in terms of quality on the PC :(

Exactly my concerns as well. In my opinion games played on a console (PS3 or Xbox) look much better than those for the PC.

Maybe that's only to make more money, as most people will buy a PC anyway for doing other stuff than gaming, whereas the consoles are mainly for gaming (and for some nerds they are also media centers ;)).

The reputation of pc gaming is largely the fault of nvidia and ati, and companies like Tiny and PC World. Obviously microsoft has a lot to do this.

The latter sell absolutely shit pcs, filled with poor software and shit hardware and people expect to play games on them.

Nvidia and ATI produce some of the most shockingly poor drivers, with practically none existant linux support. How long did it take them to produce linux drivers? how long did it take them to produce 64bit drivers.

These companies need to seriously think about what they are doing.

wow, i just noticed that in your reply you were talking about graphics!

In my opinion, this is absolutely untrue! Way, way, way not true! Games on the pc are almost unanimously better looking, every time.

You can probably compare how much better ports look, but PC games nearly always look better because the hardware is better.

I think PC_Arcade is talking about bugs? That does make sense, whilst statements on graphics really don't apply.

edit: unless you pc is wank, obviously

I don't share your opinion concerning the graphics of games...

Support is something every company I know fails at. Recently I was looking for a netgear driver. They didn't care to release any driver update ever for my hardware - and this is for over 5 years now. They even stopped supporting it, lol without ever having supported it... the only driver is the initial released one which is crappy. I had to switch to another piece of hardware, thank you very much netgear - I hate you for this!

yes please ++, I'd like to see these because its not really a matter of opinion; its a matter of technicality. PCs are, always have been and always will be more powerful than consoles. Whilst working with a single set of hardware allows devs to more quickly understand and launch, the hardware dominance that PCS have just means they can always do more, faster and better in terms of graphics, geometry and technical achievement.

PCs have:
better cpus
better gpus
more ram

I don't see how this is a matter of opinion; take a game that's available on both and I just haven't found one recently or historical that looks worse on the pc than a console. You'd pretty much have to go out of your way downgrading a console game to make it look worse on a pc. Even if they have the exact same codebase, port a little bit; you still get higher resolutions in game and can force AA and effects at the hardware driver level.

You might argue games feel more comfortable on a console, games are more fun with a pad (sick freaks), etc. Those are matters of opinion; but looking better? I suppose if you are arguing looking worse looks better then that would be opinion! :)

erm... i mean "samples please +1" :)

Post subject:  Re: New PC or XBOX 360?

Well, apeaking as someone who owns a PC, a 360 and a PS3, I can assure you that the PC is MUCH better for gfx than the other two, even ignoring the resolution (most ps3 / 360 games are < 1024x768) the PC is far far superior, texture on the PC are cleaner, draw distances further and anti aliased way over the console counterpart.

I've seen the same games on all 3 and the PC wins by a mile, if you can find 1 example of a game that looks better on the 360 / ps3 I'll be amazed and I'll blame utterly piss poor programming of the PC version.
