Post subject: | Registry Cleaners |
I've been doing a little research on registry cleaners and have found nothing good. It appears most of the 'free' cleaners are not very effective or just don't work. The 'professional' cleaners seem to be along similar lines but perhaps provide a little bit more protection like forcing you to do a system restore point. I've been getting BSOD randomly when I boot up. I reboot and everything is fine after that so it is not a big deal so far. I've read a possible cause for this could be a corrupt registry. Many of the articles that I've read basically say that reg cleaners are dangerous in the hands of a novice as they will delete DLLs that you need or other horrific acts to screw things up royal. I've tried Registry Mechanic and some other program I can't remember and they both rendered my FTP program dead. I'm sure the problems were more but when I found that one, I just restored back to before I did a 'clean'. So, my question is does anyone have a recommendation for a good cleaner or should I heed the words of many a google search and not bother with this type of program? When it comes to the registry, I am a novice. I mean, I now how to find and edit an entry but when I make a change it is usually directed by someone else. TIA! |

I use CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com -pretty basic, but does a fine job of keeping things a bit more tidy -i've used it for a long time without isssue on both vista and xp machines ------------------ Registry Cleaning: CCleaner uses an advanced Registry Cleaner to check for problems and inconsistencies. It can check the following: * File Extensions * ActiveX Controls * ClassIDs * ProgIDs * Uninstallers * Shared DLLs * Fonts * Help File references * Application Paths * Icons * Invalid Shortcuts and more... ------------------ @fuEgo -thanks, i'll check out the iobit software... i've used their defrag in the past... |

I use regsupreme pro, regvac and the cleaner of tune up utilities. Never had problems with those. And indeed many cleaners can mess up your system. |

I have CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner, and it checks - Registry Integrity - COM/ActiveX entries - Uninstall entries - Font entries - Shared DLLs - Application Paths - Help Files information - Windows Startup Items I never had probs with this, although I'm not 100% what it REALLY does (like so many things with computers). |

Which is kinda my concern with these programs in general. I think what I really need to do is learn more about the various functions of the registry to have confidence in using these cleaners. I tried two of them and they both created the same problem with WSFTP. I get an error saying that WSFTP is not configured for this user. I'm guessing it deleted an entry in the registry permitting me to run my FTP client. Once I found that problem I just assumed that there would be more like it. In a way I was hoping that by selecting 'fix all' that the cleaner would know what it was doing. Hence, I think I will try to learn more precisely the nature of the BSOD problem and go from there. I guess this is worth asking as well: For you all that use these cleaners, have you ever needed to restore your computer due the cleaning process? Using two cleaners, they both found around 600(!) problems to fix.... |

Didn't had a problem (yet). But backup first if you're worried... I use True Image. |

I don't play games (under Linux). Well maybe those standard games like Black Jack... |
