Im tired of burning all my movies out on dvds. too much hassle. and since the prices of HD's have gotten so low now, I thought it's about the time to make the swap, storing my stuff on external HDs instead. The only con I see in this, is the frailty of storing so many films in one place... ie: if a dvd is scratched or broken, I loose a handful of movies. if a HD falls to the floor, I stand the risk of loosing around one thousdand movies...

Ive also gathered that I should get an external HD that doesn't require external power...

other comments and thoughts?

How long do external HDs last? Most stand alones don't support playback from external HDs as far as I know.

If you have a big collection of rips and are thinking about changing to HD storage, then I'm sure you don't have a shitty standalone! If you want to reduce the danger of data loss -> RAID. :beerchug:
An old but reliable PC + many HDs + something like FreeNAS is great.

I've switched to Hd storage and I'm very happy with it. Used to burn DVDs for hours. :)

Also Western Digital do a TV media player that plays files from HD or Flash drives via USB.

Got mine for like four years now (mainly for backingup movies, project files etc.), its a toshiba and I never had any problems yet. About lifetime, i've read somewhere that it can be anything from half a second to 10/15 years

http://research.google.com/archive/disk_failures.pdf

some interesting finds:
-failure rates are indeed definitely correlated to drive manufacturer, model, and age
-failure rates did not correspond to drive usage except in very young and old drives (i.e. heavy data "grinding" is not a significant factor in failure)
-there is less correlation between drive temperature and failure rates than might have been expected, and drives that are cooled excessively actually fail more often than those running a little hot

I have three external HDDs now. They all have external power and it doesn't give me problems at all. Since the newest one is 750GB, I stopped burning DVDs. Actually, I copied all files from old DVDs back to this HDD and I have all my movierips in one place now. The risk of losing it is very low, imo. The HDD will last much longer than the DVDs ever will. Even without failing the DVDs will expire in a few years, if the HDD never fails it will live longer than me. I only burn rips to DVDr for temporary reasons, but not for backup anymore. My internal HDDs are the backup now ;) If the external HDD wil crash, I'll still have the internal ones.

yeah, HDs got alot of good things going for them.. only problem for me is that 750gb is nowhere near enough. 10 times that, and we're talking...
They're still a bit too expensive for me to buy ten 1gb hds though..

Same here. I think that big HDDs are too expensive. I would prefer a 2,5" one without external power supply, because I hate to plug that in and fight with the cabling every time. :) Unfortunately they are even more expensive. :(

Not true, the bigger 3,5" HDDs have the best price/capacity ratio.

Could be, but I look more at the final price. And as I said I would prefer a 2,5" one.
