Just like Slayer I really want one that does everything the WDTV does and a DVD drive in it. I simply have too much off 'em lying around and I want to have as little as possible machines near my TV :)

I'd stab you for the 50 bucks and thus become the rich nerd. Might have a boner at that time as well.

I've got a boner right now, if that helps.

WDTV still the way to go? I want a media player for mkv's, which I can play from USB or through networking it to my PC.

WDTV, Popcorn Hour and Xtreamer are still the popular choices. If you get one go for a new model, since older units (specially older WDTVs) are not getting some needed firmware updates (read here).

But I am an HTPC user and that's IMO the best solution. They cost just a bit more than a WDTV and are far more flexible. Take a look here: http://lifehacker.com/5391308/build-a-s ... -the-cheap

Search for prices of small ION/Atom based HTPCs to get an idea.

I have a Patroit Box Office, works nice and you can even build in a 2.5" HDD. :)

I have an Acer Revo r3650, and am very happy with its performance.

This one looks OK to me, but I'm surprised it still costs $ 130. Anyone know of any cheap selling sites with this box?

edit: found a store nearby which sells it for 90 Euros. Pretty good, right?

Is it the WDTV Live? Read my post above about the problems with older models, WD discontinued the support of older units, the non Live ones, and they are not getting needed firmware updates (read here).

If you can handle a bit of tinkering another option is an Apple TV version 1, I think they cost less than a WDTV Live and you can install xbmc.

Yes, it's the live. The "not live" is 85 Euros, but for those 5 Euros I'd rather have support and HDMI :)

I need a Mac computer, it says on that wiki, and I don't have that, so I don't think Apple TV is an option.

Btw: I checked Popcorn Hour, but it is twice as expensive as the WDTV Live.

No you don't. The Apple TV is "a MAC computer" and xbmc will run as a native OSX app there, but you can install the whole thing via windows. But of course the tinkering is not for everyone. If you can get a WDTV at a good price, then it's a nice solution.

I've read good reviews @ some High-Def trackers, I think it's the only standalone with multichannel FLAC support, but it's a bit expensive. At that price range most people prefer HTPCs.

elguaxo, I could have sworn blind that wiki page said you needed a mac and made no mention of windows when it was posted :o

Looks like the page might have been updated:
